Is special packaging required? Are there things that customs won't allow?
is UPS ok?.
Is it cost prohibitive to ship a part smaller than my cat?

My suggestion would be to use USPS to ship over the border. UPS and FedEx charge crazy brokerage fees. If USPS doesn't work for whatever reason DHL delivers stuff quickly and for a reasonable price.

I'd highly recommend against UPS!!! Always charge at both ends for customs fees, once got triple charged

Use USPS.
Is the seller is close to the border?
If so, it will be faster for him and cheaper for who ever is paying for shipping to pick up his part in the US and bring everything back home himself.
Don't use UPS like other have said.
And don't ship the cat. The Custom Officers don't like it when a box is moving by itself!

Is Roger selling cats now?
USPS for parts not required in a hurry or DHL for faster service; if using 928sRus they know how to get you what you need.

I use a parcel service just across the border, make a trip every couple of weeks.
The savings in the actual shipping "Not counting extra fees" pays for it and we usually have a lot there.
My second choice, especially if it is small and low value, neither of which happens with the 928 on a regular basis, is postal.

As others have said stay away from the "Brown Clowns".
USPS is best, but make sure you request a signature or Canada Post will leave the package at the door if nobody is home.
If you need fast use DHL, the broker fees are more reasonable than UPS or FedEx.
And mark as a gift with a lower value.

USPS is the best for cat-sized or smaller packages internationally.
1/3-1/2 the price of UPS, or better.
FWIW I shipped a ~12*10*4, 5lb box from CA to Alberta for $15 about 3 weeks ago USPS.

What Bertrand and Adam said.
Avoid the Brown Clowns at all costs.
If you're not in a hurry, USPS.
If you need it now, DHL. (Like overnight fast).
