Noah, if you're still wondering, I installed my welmeisters tighter coiling down, as that's what my research pointed to. Seems to stay put fine, feels good.

still concerned about oil tube breakage I made a brace out of sheet metal then welded it. Also threw a couple more spot welds on the top of the oil pan support tube-to-flange.

followed by checking counter balance clearance when the crank turns. all good.

Cleaned up the oil pan gasket for re-use. cleaned the pan mounting bolts & placed dabs of ultra grey silicone at the seams.

Tried for a ajsdhfalsurfhaeru!! hour to mount the oil pan. something is binding. I'm concerned that it's the turbo oil drain bung weld. I might have welded it in the wrong place. Not in a good mood right now.

with that brazing we're going to call Wilson, "Midas"

can't help but wonder how hard it'd be to fab a new pickup tube out of heavier-gauge metal.

Yeah, the 2 biggest threats from balance shaft delete:

-Oil tube breakage (which I believe is true), and adding the collar will just increase the weight/chance of breaking.
-fuel rail breakage (which I am unsure of the validity to this claim).

MANY aspects are horribly engineered.

I promise this: next time I need to drop the pan, the engine is being lifted out to do it. I might even consider that for changing the clutch. Sorry but I do my best work standing up, not on my back on a slimy floor getting dirt in my eye.

The typical methods for working on these cars is a$$backwards.

------

But, for me the reward is in the driving of the car. The feedback is second to non in my book. I'm keeping Wilson for good. Make him close to bullet proof & there is nothing he can't do.

It's difficult to live with a vehicle that isn't compatible with your own engineering mind. I feel that way about the road going 951, there is too much junk under the hood. Over time I will make this car easier to work on.

After work I'll put masking tape over the bung weld & re-fit then check for scuffing on the tape. If it is rubbing on the girdle I will "relieve" some material & try to use the bung in it's present location.

What do you think the bung could be getting into to make it bind? Any way the welding warped the pan????
