Amazing to me that Porsche itself produced this drek; Watch the segment on the transaxle, about hallway through, and you'll think 928s were derived from 924s, and that all trace their lineage to VW. 928s were never in the same family as 924/44/68. Those cars glommed onto the 928 power train at some point, when 1/2 of the 928 engine was used, but in fact, according to Long's book, which is probably the definitive history of the 928 (and Projekt 928 itself), the 928 design started before the 924 design, even though the 924 was released first, in 76. As we know here, the 928 was a clean sheet design (relatively speaking) while the 924 was a joint VW project (like the 914 before it), until VW pulled out.

I would expect more from the manufacturer itself

 

Do you mean the "Disruption" video on the linked page? It was discussed here earlier, with disappointment that it didn't address the transaxle cars at all, really. But I think we all understood it was a marketing piece for the Panamera, and had to be judged under the relaxed standards of truth associated with marketing. Painfully ironic, of course, since it can be said that the Panamera is most closely related to the 928, in some ways the most disruptive Porsche of all time (but not in a way useful for marketing the Panamera).

Yeah, awful, almost ignoring the 928 among the transaxles, and implying the wrong development timeline and origins. Together with the the "Disruption" video, it almost seems like Porsche is pursuing a revisionist strategy as part of the Panamera promotion.

My dealer is having a Panamera introduction luncheon this Saturday. Perhaps I'll get there early for a prominent parking spot.

I remember reading somewhere that the 928 is the first fully Porsche designed sports car, not like the 911 which can trace it's lineage to the beetle !

 

Maybe this is to soften the blow when the new "928" ---cough--- Pana Coupe ---cough--- is based on an Audi / VW platform with a Prius style drive-train.

That has been posted in this forum a few thousand times.

I'm not sure Porsche ever came right out and said it, you just need to look at history. Project 928 started in around 1971/1972ish. At that time the only street cars were 911, 356, 914. All based on something previous.

It wasn't until the Boxster did Porsche start from scratch to design a "new" car after the 928.

The 911 diehards will angerly point out how wrong this is, the 911's of the 70's had nothing in common with the bug and the 993 was a completely different design. We just smile and nod.... sort of like when the neighbors kid insists on forcing that square peg in the round hole.
Reminds me of an amusing argument I was in years ago at Siebkens (yes booze was involved). This 911 purist was boasting that since 928's "parts" were tested in Mercedes and Audi chassis prior to the 928 platform being ready, that our cars too were "based" on those platforms. I think he was also married to his sister, some details are fuzzy.

 

Remember, every car when taken down all the way to its roots is either a Golf or Fiat 500.

 

Why stop there. Most all cars are built on an assembly line, so they can be traced back to the Model A. It's all just a bunch of Fords.
