Yes, I've sent your "whats the answer" thread to several folks over the years with that dilemma..

But my post was in response to the guy above mine who didn't specify manual or power rack, just talked about offset change.

IMO, I would replace the left spindle with the speedometer hole with a solid early spindlex it is cheap insuranice against the risk of failure and subsequently crashing the track car.

My early steel front control arms were reinforced with steel tabs welded the full length of the perimeter.

No, from any '85.5 or '86 NA 944. (Early offset with electronic speedometer).

Here's what can happen to an early left spindle:

While Van did not specifically call out aluminum - he did mention that 85.5 and 86 are early offset.

Pyropete - '83-'85 944s are identified by the boxy dash, exterior rain moldings, and other "early" things. They all have the "early offset" and steel control arms.

In '85.5, there was a major redesign on the 944, which included the curvy dash, updated interior, flush rain moldings, and other "late" things, like aluminum control arms. They were still "early offset".

in '87, ABS brakes were introduced as a factory option - and to make room for the ABS encoder rings and sensors, the suspension had to be modified and the rim offset had to change to still fit within the fenders. '87+ are "late offset" cars. In fact, the same is true for the 911 line - there are "early offset" cars before the introduction of ABS and then "late offset".

So, a quiz for you:
Where does an '86 turbo fall?
