On my '13 C4S I've got an OEM set of silver Sport Design wheels and another set of Carrera S wheels for my winter tires in the same color. Both could use a dab of touch-up paint in a few spots. What's the prevailing wisdom on the best place to obtain some color matched touch up paint? Please provide a paint code # if possible. Clear coat as a top coat needed as well?
I tried searching on this but never found the exact answer. I figured the wisdom of the List would come to my rescue.
they dont have codes for wheel, you should take the wheel to a paint supply and they will match it, if you have spray painting equipment you can base coat, clear coat, but if you are brushing you cant do any pro painting like that.
I would suggest go to a auto parts store, match up with some spray cans and do some spraying or brushing with that kind of paint or look at one of the dr color chip sites and match up.
otherwise you are going to be paying hundreds of dollars for paint materials and it wont come out as good
My experience has been very good with letting a pro do this. I've paid between 130 and 170 a wheel. They either do it onsite (come to my office in a truck, like a small UHaul, with mounting equipment and a paint both and a small oven) or they take the wheel away and bring it back. They mark the tire relative to the valve stem, break the bead (but leave tire installed, just pushed inwards) sand any gouges or scrapes or chips, spray the whole thing in one of a hundred colors of silver they have in the truck or onsite, clearcoat it all, remount the tire exactly where it was before so no need for rebalancing, pop it in the oven for a little bit of speed drying, reinstall on the car, all in about 90 minutes.
I've not done it on my 991, but did it on an aftermarket wheel on my 997TT and it came out great. Also on other non-Porsches in the family.
Hit reply too soon..... you can get the paint separately as well. It is an excellent match. Thoroughly clean wheels and wipe down with solvent to completely degrease. Clear coat for best protection.
I repaired a roughly 6" rash using Bondo and the Wurth set. The color match is good but the metal flakes are a bit larger... but you have to be looking for it to tell. No one will notice if you don't point it out.
I've also decided to touch up some of the tiny pinhole-size rock "pits" using Dr. ColorChip on the spokes on my Carrera S's and saw several recommendations to use GT-Silver on the forums. I'll try that within a few days and will let you know how that looks. The nice thing with Dr ColorChip is if it isn't looking right you can easily rub it back off... but it is really only good for tiny pits. I figure as long as the pits aren't black any more that will look much better. At some point I guess I'll pay someone to do a total refinish of the wheels.
Might want to also post a photo of your wheel, you may have a Hyper Coating wheel that is not a one-stage color......
Example of the wheel below, this is not a simple one stage color, when we replicate a color like this it's a bit different to get an exact match, this is not your common 997/996 oe silver color.
Forget wheels more pics of Eva please! Jokes aside does anyone know the color of the painted segments on the sport techno wheels? I have heard it's GT silver but wanted to confirm before buying touchup paint since Porsche offers so many shades of silver
Arctic Silver worked for me when I was touching up a Carrera S wheel. If it is not the same as what is originally on the wheel it is its twin brother. See this: https://rennlist.com/forums/991/9697...ver-paint.html
I have Sport Technos and had a 2 inch curb rash near the bead. Tried the GT Silver yesterday. Lightly sanded with 800 grit to knock down the roughness, then clear coated. The results are better but not great-somewhat darker than I anticipated. Will try another gray as recommended.
