I think you need to take a magnifying glass along with you in the car for these friends of yours. The horses in the both logos have curved up tails.

The 996, being the "transitional" 911, was intentionally different - but then Porsche learned that there are some number of consumers who are just has averse to change as Porsche designers from 1960 through 1980.
