Wheels that would work
I'm picking an 85.5 that has fuch wheels on it. I love the wheels, they work perfectly with the newly redone black paint on the car. major flaw, in my opinion, finding tires for it. tire rack comes back with 3 results.
so, what I'm asking is , since the Fuchs are 15, if I go to the 951 turbo phone dials, that are 16, what size tire would it be and would the offset work as I recall the 85 and 86 had early offsets not the later year offsets. but beyond that, what other wheels would work, and I'd prefer porsche style wheels from that period. nothing over 18 as it just doesn't look right on the car.
I like the sewer plate wheels from the 928, same width as the Fuchs but 16s not 15s, same for the d90. other thought was the cup 2 wheels from the 968 which I think we're 17, could be wrong. I think the cup wheels were the same ones used on the 968cs.
any idea would help. I haven't had a 944 since 2010 and haven't even thought about them until recently when this feel into my lap.

Great looking car, the wheels look like 16's ? either way leave it as it is unless your intent on track days or autocross etc...
I know the tyre selection is slim, but you could change the size a little, 205/60/15 has more selection, are they a 7 & 8" front / rear do you know? or the same, are the tyre sizes also different?
The Fuchs are light wheels, anything else is heavier and will slow the car's acceleration...and change the steering scrub, effort and handling feel.
If you did decide to fit other Porsche 16" or 17" you will have to buy and fit concentric wheel spacers and they all have offsets in the 50's and you car has ET23

There are 16" phone dials with early offset that came on the '86 951. You just have to be careful and make sure you get the correct offset since phone dials were the only wheel made in both offsets.

As R pointed out, your wheels are early offset so the late offset cup wheels and others will not fit.
Personally, I think the Fuchs are the best possible wheels for an early 944. I think they look perfect on your car. Look for slightly different width and aspect ratio sizes in the 15's and you will find lots more options.

If you like the sewer lid/d90 style wheels and want something a little different you could try and find a set of Porsche Wintercult wheels.
They are kind of like a mix between the d90 and a DTM turbofan style wheel and if I remember correctly they come in 16".
The only thing I'm not sure of from memory is the offset. That can be overcome with spacers though if they turn out to be late offset.
Here's a pic I snagged from google:

The seller said 15 inch fuch, maybe he mistyped. I'll ask him later today if perhaps he hit the wrong key
they're 7 front, 8 rear
Im looking mostly so I can have a set of all season and a set of summer performance tires, the 15 inch size doesn't have a performance tire it seems.

I host driving events in my area, nj and ny, and am looking for a tire that is more suited to harder driving on back roads.
I might auto x or do some pca stuff with it

The lack of power in the N/As really makes the Fuchs a far-superior option compared to anything else except maybe BBS RS, but 16" Fuchs (and RS) are pricey. There are quite a few aftermarket wheels by manufacturers like Borbet that are replicas of later Porsche wheel styles in an early offset, but they are all very heavy. The lack of 15" tires in our size is a real drag, I agree. If you want to lower the car then you could use a 205/55 without having too much fender gap, but at stock height it will look silly.

How about the Pirelli P6000 for your Fuchs? Lightweight wheels are a must on our lower powered cars. A bit pricey, but it's a good summer performance tire:

Sumitomo makes HTRA/SP02 tires in 15" up to 215/60:

That's very hard ! But higher ratio Street sidewalled tyres Have to be made with a higher Treadwear compound than lower ratio's because they generate more heat.
Which a 60 profile tyre if available in a 200 Treadwear for example would overheat and wear out and loose grip quicker which may not be an issue for those looking for a Stickier Street tyre but you'll not find one because manufacturers have to make the TW harder.
