Cam Shaft Missing teeth, pics and options?
So while getting the variocam replaced, found out I am missing a tooth. Also need to do some polish work.
I assume my options are:
New for like $$$ in the thousands range.
Used
Rebuilt? Weld a tooth on and then file it down?
Anyone have experience and advice?
I think I am better off leaning towards low mileage use clean up. I have 150k on my set.
Kids, reason to get your chain replaced over time!

It is my recollection that Mark Anderson (Mr 928 at 928 International) has had broken tooths repaired with great success.

WebCam in CA can fix those teeth for $350.
I had them re-grind some 944S cams recently, but didn't have teeth work done.

I would be more concerned with the damaged bearing journal. A fixed cam in a bad journal will result in another bad cam. Were the caps on correctly? Good catch on the teeth, looks like the one two to the left wasn't far behind

Looks like some level of oil starvation took place at one point. Might possibly have had issues with cracked oil pickup tube from misaligned balance shafts.
Cam chains should be at max be an 80k item if not 60k item. You should see the amount of wear the tensioner pads show in some cases. This was never shown as a service item but should definitely be considered one. You are on borrowed time and will end up paying dearly in the end.
I have seen cam chains snap at around 60k from broken/failed tensioner pads. Not typically but has happened. Took both cams with it when it failed as well as lots of bent valves.

The shop was under the impression they remove the whole gear, is that not the case?

Agree on the chain.

+1.
The pickup tube has a screen so it wont get picked up. Also, they pytically settle at the bottom and can be found when you drop the pan. Another option would be to switch to a 951 style magnetic drain plug and hope it picks it up. Lastly, you can also try fishing a magnetic stick in through the drain hole to see if it sticks. There are baffles in the pan so the likelyhood of it sticking is low.

The front cap is stamped with a 5.xx number, while the rear cap is stamped with a 8.xx number. They might have been mixed up when the pads were done last

Getting my cams back this week. Fingers X they are all good! I found 1 part of the tooth in the top.
I think my best bet for now is to just install a magnetic drain plug.
