Default Road Trip: Chicago-Asheville-Chicago

I had a little time before I start a new job so I jumped in the 993 for a 1300 mile round trip to Asheville, NC from Chicago.

The drive down was hot even with AC but it is summer still and the AC can't keep up. This is my first roadie with the Fister Is and it is great. I can hear my music. Novel for sure.

The car is so much fun to drive even when the roads are dull. I really love it still. Perhaps even more since I did the AWD to RWD delete/conversion this winter. That coupled with the RS wheel carriers, new bearings all around and sweet wheels and it is a joy.

I will admit that at the end of the 11 hour trip it felt very loose and a little sloppy but that could just be my senses being fried. I did drink like 8 cups of coffee. Many bonus cups were filled up!

Some goofy photos. Will post a few more later when I get home.
Asheville skate park. I worked up a sweat.

That's hard earned patina.

Aged to imperfection.

A little record shopping.

Truck stop sunrise.

Doritos!

That could be taken a few different ways.

Sounds like a great trip all around!

There is a LOT of hard-earned patina in Asheville...

Glad to see another 993/Skate enthusiast out there! One day I'll get the 993 out for a nice long road trip.
Until then, weekend morning drives will have to do.

Check out Waynesville nearby. Neat little town with lots of shops, good restaurants. Of course, if you have the time, The Biltmore Estate is magnificent. It takes a full day to do it justice.

Ok guys. Just got home.

Some mechanical issues last night but I sorted it out.

1. My homemade switch mount that I mounted under the dash was just a little too far forward and was putting tension on the wiring loom that feeds all the switches. Long story short, I lost central locking, sunroof, and spoiler because some wires broke free from the barrels that mount to the switch hardware.

Total headache. I got my friends soldering gear and we resoldered a bunch of the wires to their metal pins.

Then I realized that I didn't take a photo of what wire went to what pin and we sat in his drive way going through all the possible combinations. Fun.

2. I noticed the parking lights were on. I couldn't get them to turn off. I was worried it would drain the battery over night so I took out the turn signal bulbs in the passenger side and hoped for the best. I am going to sort out the problem tomorrow.

3. On the road, the rear turn signal lens screw popped out and I must have driven an hour with it hanging. No one gave me a heads up! Wow.

Truth be told, that has happened to me before. Each lens has one screw and it likes to back out. At least I didn't lose the lens housing.

I duct taped it in and got home with no issue. People probably hated me so much for not signaling!!

Anyway, 1300 miles and I'm home. Good times. Love that damn car. Love it.

That picture of the Benz speaks volume for the old German engineering. Good luck finding similar picture in 30 years of today Mercedes.

True. I feel the same about the 993. It is a complex machine but seems to age pretty darn well. And takes loads of use in stride.
