I put this out in the general discussion thread but thought this is a better area. Sorry for posting twice.
New and first time Porsche owner here and need some help. I feel very stupid asking but I know no better place to start then here. In the engine compartment all the way to the left sort of to the left and behind the air intake is a container with a screw top and liquid inside with a min and max line,, what is that?
Also in the middle is a yellow dip stick. Is that my oil dipstick? If not, what is it and where is the dip stick?
And where will I find the air filter? I changed the cabin filter which is in the front of the car, but where is the air filter?

That container is the coolant reservoir.
Yes, that is your oil dipstick - use it.
The air filter is inside that big black box you see on top of your engine.
P.S. You might want to pick up a manual on your car and read it cover to cover.
1. Coolant bottle/reservoir - holds the stuff that cools your engine because your 996 is "water cooled".
2. Air filter is inside the big black plastic box, undo the screws, unclip the cable to the MAF, unclip 2 hidden clips holding the cable in place, undo the jubilee clip to the throttle body and take the top off. Air filter is inside...
3. Go buy the 101 projects for your 996 or as tripleblack mentioned read your manual
Sorry for being so dumb. This is my first Porsche and rear engine car. I have had a few vettes and they seemed more intuitive, anyway I am learning and do appreciate the help. Hopefully I will have better things to share in the coming months.
By the way, Avatar is Henry the VIII's toilet seat from his palace at Hampton Court outside of London. I will change it this weekend with a picture of my car.

Don't sweat it, the first few days I spent figuring out the same stuff. Simply googling 996 instructions on _____ should give you lots of detailed threads. I've relied on archived forum threads for several updates on my 996. Ask away & search & you'll learn quickly.
The first week I had mine, I got really excited because I found the air filter and was able to change it. It seemed like a huge accomplishment. These cars aren't real intuitive but there is a ton of good documentation for DIY projects. To start, look at the stickies at the top of this page and check out pelican parts how to section.

Same - new guy enthusiasm, probably, but every time I get something done on my 996 I find it hugely satisfying.

That big round thing in the center is your steering wheel.
The little round thing next to the big round thing, is your ignition switch.
The little stick in the middle... ugg... you get the picture.
