mufflers differences.

mufflers differences.
Hello guys.
was wondering if there is any significant difference between the various muffler versions, both from structure and fitment.
looking at the parts list i can see 4 versions.
the last one on the list, is for tiptronic. any difference in fitment vs the manual?
also looks like every two years the muffler was updated.
how com the 99-00 is half price?
third version, is for 00 and up (05?), but the engine was changed from 3.4L to 3.6L only in 02.
so it means the fitment is the same for all?
that's what it states in the year column (taken from autoatlanta website), but this column misled me in the past.
if someone can shed some light on this subject, or direct me to a source (search came with nothing) it will be greatly appreciated.
thanks in advance.
Meir.

56 and 57 are left vs. right side, I believe. I have no idea why one is twice the price of the other. I also don't know why the same part number is listed twice in the #1 and #3 spot - same part number listed for a different model range year doesn't make a lot of sense.
I'm guessing whatever parts site you're looking at is screwy.

This is interesting. Never thought there were differences. I just looked it up in the PET PDFs.
First it looks like the first entry is incorrect it should end in 55 and is for 98 and earlier left side. The right side is the same as 99 so it probably was changed for the SAI pump or something to do with the SAI (It is the 3 digits before the last two that change for l/r i.e. the 121 becomes 122 for right side. It is possible that the 12157 is the replacement now for the 98 left side since the PET I have is static in time.
The next set are 99 only (the 12156 and 12256).
The third set are 2000-2005 (the 12157 and 12257).
The last set as you know are for the tips.
The only reason I can see for the price differences is to give us one more reason to prove the 99s are the best.

Thanks for all the replies.
I'm working on building my own PSE (probebly GUNDO style with controled valve) and since I'm using my car as a DD, I'm thinking of buying another set to work on.
I have all the parts for more then one set, but I want to make sure that every muffler version will fit all 97-05 vehicles.
Edit: and yes, I think the auto Atlanta parts list is a little bit messed up.

As far as I know, the 996 mufflers are interchangeable. I have had three different sets of mufflers on mine now with no problems at all - never bothered to check part numbers.
