Default How "metallic" is the metallic paint supposed to be?

My '84 came from the factory with zinnmetallic paint, "pewter metallic" on the window sticker. Today is the 2nd day since I received the car after buying it sight unseen, and I noticed, unfortunately, that the driver's side rear quarter panel had been repainted. The paint as you can see below is more "metallically" or flakey than the OEM paint. Which in comparison seems flat. Is this how the OEM metallic paint is supposed to look? It doesn't appear very metallic.

I read somewhere that the OEM metallic paint from Porsche didn't get clear coat. Is this true? This would explain the dullness of the paint compared to the re-sprayed panel which does look to be clear coated.

The front bumper cover also is re-sprayed in the same metallic paint as the qtr panel. Again notice the difference (2nd pic below) in sheen and "metallicness".

Id say your two paints..are somewhere between a Warboy...

..and a derelict paint huffer..

Your repaint was not well mixed/prepared/matched. Its subtle in the OEM finish.

Just looking at Bendorth's '78 petrolblaumetallic that he posted and it seems more metallic than the paint on my car. Hmmm.

The metallic paint is clear coated from the factory. Its incredibly hard to make metallic finishes blend in... well, hard to make it blend in cost effectively.... Anyway, a lot of body works get them in and out and on to the next job. Restorers will do a much better/more expensive job.

Modern cars have a huge amount of flake in them.. and I dont like it. I think the older metallic finishes are a lot more classy and subtle.

His paint doesn't look original to me. Overspray on stickers (edges) normally mean it's been repainted. So, the amount of metallic in his 78 would be questionable...or subject to painter's mixing abilities/choices.

Good to know. I agree this one was not done well, at least in the color matching. The finish is actually real good with no noticeable orange peel. Regardless, it goes on the list, way down on the list for now, of things to address.

I see. Also notice that the little fuel door "spring" is blue. This is a piece of black rubber on mine. But his car looks great none the less. A re-spray to me is not a bad thing if done correctly.

Yes, no problem if done correctly...I just wanted to point out that the "amount of metallic" in that blue paint, if repainted (and yes, agreed...the car is very sharp), may be a bad example.

Your car would be a good candidate, since you will most-likely be pulling both rubber bumpers off, someday, for the bumper shock repair.

It's all to do with the paint manufacture of the paint ppg glasurite sikens just to name a few and the person who mixes it and the set up of the spray gun when sprayed.

It's not so much the volume of metallic particles but the pitch, or grit. One can go complete 'bass boat' size or down to a finish called mica, which is much closer to a pearl. There's everything in between, and it's pretty hard to get right with cheap paint mixes.
