I like the tape idea. It is difficult to keep everything together at times.

If I may, a couple of observations:

1. It may be just superstition but it has been said that the timing belt text should be readable from the front.

2. Cam timing cannot be set accurately on the stand, IMO. The engine needs to be turned over with the starter to settle the belt.

3. Timing with a new belt should be 0° on the 1-4 side as a new belt will retard about 2° after about 1K miles.

Curse you, you are in my head again!

Understood, but I had everything off and wanted to get it back together fairly close ( i.e. less than a whole tooth off ). It is easy to tweak later, when motor is in place and I can spin with starter. If I have to pull the belt while in place to shift the belt over a tooth , that makes it a much bigger PITA.

3. Timing with a new belt should be 0° on the 1-4 side as a new belt will retard about 2° after about 1K miles.

To confirm/clarify, the instructions say Right/Passenger/1-4 should be 1-2 degrees retard to compensate for engine expansion when warm. You are indicating that measurement would be for a "used" belt. A new belt should be set to zero 0, and rechecked at about ~1k miles. What about Left/Drivers/5-8? Start at recommend 0 still, or should it be advanced a bit to allow for stretch?

Minor detour from motor work. Tie rods were showing slop, so dropped in a fresh pair.

It may never be seen again and there won't be any performance gains, but the throttle plate sure shines up nice!
