Last night, I am reading all these posts about taking the bottom engine cover off, and I thought...It's only 5 screws I'll take it off...

Well, I armed myselfwith my handy stubby screwdriver as there is only 7 to 8 inches from the floor, and streching my arms as far as I could, removed that 5 screws. The bottom tray was off!!! Yeeaaaa

Then, I just realized, that I could not slide it out of under the car!! The tray has 2 tall pieces that are close to 10 inches long that attach to the upper portion of the rear wheel wells!

So, here I was with the tray on the floor under the car. I couldn't move the car as I would have driven on top of the tray, neither I could removed the tray without lifting the car.

I tried to jack the car up on one end with the car jack, but that didn't raise the car enough.

So...I had to put the tray back on while I held it with one hand and tried to get the screws with the other hand. After 1 hour...it was finally back on!!!

My contibution to the Rennlist Universal Knowledge...DO NOT REMOVE THE ENGINE TRAY UNLESS IS ON JACKS!!!

I am very lucky as I have a lift in my garage. The main thing is that you were not afraid to try something! LOL

 

Thank you very much for sharing your predicament. That is on my things-to-do list for this week and you probably just saved me from the same fate. Now I'll just drive it over to my friendly 76 station (with 100 octane!) and borrow their lift for a few.... Cocktails whenever your in Los Angeles....

 

Ha ha, the same thing happened to me once too. You just gotta shrug and laugh. I think I just jacked up one side and was able to pull it out.

this is not stupid, it's part of the learning curve. And as far as you can backtrack without opening your wallet you're safe! If you lift one side of your car at a time, slide a big piece of wood under the wheel, then go on the other side. doing so, you'll get the few inches you need to remove the bottom engine cover.

 

I managed to install the mufflers with the tray dropped and stayed under the car. I found putting the the tray back was more difficult than installing my RSR mufflers

 

I did an end run on the problem. I built ramps onto which I drive the car. 2 person job but gives you the extra clearance you ned to take that **** engine cover off

Yeah..It was kind of funny actually. I thought it was going to take 5 minutes...TOPS! Wife and I were watching TV and I took off to the garage during the commercials...told her.."be right back honey...", an hour later she pokes her head in the garage to see if I was OK and sees my face and arms covered in grease...rolls her eyes...shakes her head and just said..."Good night dear...going to bed..." :-)

Thanks for sharing I did the same thing in the first week of ownership of my 993TT but I just didn't tell anyone.... As TOGA stated... part of the learning curve and mine is very steep

 

This is the ramps I talked about. They are fine with any tire size up to 285's. If you got monster rubber adjust the width accordingly. Made 5 sets of these so far and the following is what works best.

Dimensions:

Lenght: 56 cms or 22 inches. This is the max lenght you can have... otherwise you will not have clear your jacking point.

Height: 9.5 cms or 3 3/4 inches. (my car has 103 mms clearance at the front splitter). You could make the crest higher depending on your car and ground clearance.

Width: 22 cms or 8 5/8 inches. The through bolts are drilled oversize. I split a pair coz with the car weight on the ramps, the bolts were too tight. With the oversize, it allows for movement given an uneven driveway for example. Just add large washers as needed.

Crest to forward edge: 15 cms or 6 inches.

Forward stop is made of hardwood.

Ramping is a 2 person job with the second person being well instructed. Going up the ramp is a slowslow process.

The first Rennlister who produces these in billet aluminium gets a free Brooklyn Raspberry!
