That's how I felt about my mahle pistons.
Don't know the history on these, but I got them NIB, they have the RSR style top, but spec'ed out made for a stock 3.0 head chamber at 10:1cr. Real 3.0 RSR heads have a different chamber cc.
I believe they were made for someone's race program and these were destined for a stock head based back-up engine.
I had to get the cylinders re-plated as they were about .003" undersized compared to OE mahle's.

Aircooled, it would need holes for the air to get through the lid.
I have a GT lid, wire mesh, you can sort of see it through the screen.
The biggest letdown is I have this beautiful twin plug distributor, but once in the 914 all you can see is a bag of snakes coming from the top of the dizzy.
Rainhats on the carbs so you can't see the stacks, also you can't see the fan....sigh...
But on paper it spec's out at 250-280hp, so at least it should go like stink.
And sound like a Weber six

We've always had aircooled bugs, etc. with 2-3X stock (50) HP.
My 1967 beetle is a 180hp 2.6L T4, (102mm nickies, FI, 46mm ITB's, cam, 911 tranny, etc) in a 1700lb car. I think this will be a somewhat comparable power to weight ratio.
BTW she bought me the 914, for my birthday/fathers day she bought me new tires for the bug....you got to love a wife like that.

The 914/6 had a 69T 2.0 engine. Porsche sold the 914/6 from 1969 to 1972.
This is based on a '79 3.0 SC engine.
My 1974, 914 is not a "real" /6 it's a conversion, but all 914/4 's had the stamping's, cutout's, etc for the six engine. It's a real easy and common conversion.
The factory won the class and 6th overall at the 1970 Le Mans in a 914GT which IIRC was a 2.0 S engine.
This was the same race all the backgrounds were shot for Steve McQueen's movie.
Bit of trivia, the first F1 safety car was a 914 at Mosport in 1973.

Mark do you have a full on shop ?
I think it would be an awesome Rennlist cruise to come out and visit. Especially those of us who attempt our own engine and car repair work. I might even wear my dilivar necklace I made.. it only cost me about 6 grand.

I have a full on country shop, or some might call it a farm shop.
I do have enough property to host a show, if I bush hog the field behind my house I likely could do a 100 car show plus parking. Just my front and back yards I could do maybe 30 cars + parking.
Maybe in the future, I did a couple back 12+ years ago for the 914 and VW crowd but I can't afford to foot the whole bill. I can even do camping/weekend.
But it's a lot of work and I would need volunteers, sponsors, porta potty rental, insurance, etc, etc.
3 and 6 years ago I hosted 901, 911, 914 transmission clinics that were quite successful, everyone walked away with a rebuilt transmission. Thing is you can only do this with a 901 base tranny, as cores are quite cheap and often if you have 2 good cores you can make 1 good transmission. Plus spares are cheap enough you can have enough new parts on hand for the clinic.
You can't do this over a weekend for engines or 915 up transmissions.
