Used car for <$15k?
My buddy is looking for a car for his 21 yr old. Less than $15k, no sports cars (not at that age ) but otherwise not too picky. The typical low maintenance, decent quality day to day vehicle that can stand up to some abuse
If anyone has a line on something pls let me know
Thanks!

I'm not a mechanic but after 18 years in the automotive aftermarket industry: Toyota. Likely not high on his wishlist but will fit the bill in every way you listed.

if your looking for low mtce & low operating costs for problem free driving: you should consider the Honda Fit.
I have one - it is unbelieveable.
1.5L engine (size of a turkey) - 5 speed automatic - easy to work on.
oil change costs $25 for parts.
I put in $35 for >600 km's.
Front wheel drive; can easily do a 180" u-turn in a 2 lane road.
Easy to park in parking lots.
High resale value.
Coffee cup holders on the dash!
Huge cargo area in the back--seats drop down to the floor.
4 doors.
everything works (side mirrors, glove box closes, a/c fantastic, etc.... I have a ford 150, everything is defective except the engine)
it cruises at 120km easily , tops out at 140Km. Cops dont even look at you.
Only draw backs: $1400 in insurance, terrible radio, the tire size is unique and you have to decide on the spot when purchasing, otherwise its gone.
My second choice would be anything from toyota - they are bullet proof.
if you want headaches buy a POS ford or GM.
Also, i have a close friend who is a tow truck driver-- he picks up hyundais all the time.

It's funny you should mention Honda Fit.Last year I volunteered for the fall defensive driving school and had a chance to ride in several cars in the accident avoidance and mini slalom part.I also lucked out in riding in the Fit for the longer slalom course. Out of all the cars of the day,the Fit was the funnest and most agile car I rode in. The new driver was having the time of her life and I couldn't believe how this car handled. I teased a friend of mine for buying one and after that day I went and apologized to him. Great little car. My wife also has a 2009 Honda Civic bought new with 190k on it now, and we've never had to fix anything other than a few taillight bulbs.Cheers.
