Reason for data monitoring?

Reason for data monitoring?
I really object to in-car monitors for all the Orwellian/nanny state issues but does anyone know the reason for them? The equipment capital cost, installation, monitoring and analysis of data will all be incremental so how will this reduce insurance costs....and guess who will end up paying? Also, according to police data, most accidents are caused by failing to yield, following too close and loss of control while not speeding. Data recorders don't monitor anything that directly relates to the main causes of accidents so they won't reduce accidents or insurance company risk. What am I missing here?

Its part and parcel of the Grey Power idea of skimming the top 10% of the driving market (no tickets and no accidents - ever) in order to increase their profit margin. I have no doubts if I installed one of these devices in my car and then went out on the 407 that the very next week or so I would be receiving a cancellation letter on my policy. The scam in their TV ad's is that if you drive 'well' (define?) you'll get UP to a 25% reduction in premiums from our already over priced/inflated/ripped off Ontario insurance industry. But they don't guarantee this in writing. I'm willing to bet you would see a 15% at best. You could do this by buying a different class of car if you just wanted to lower premiums.
So you could drive along failing to yield all day, do rolling stops at stop signs, almost roll over that kid on the bike and as long as you don't have some scammy industry assessment of what constitutes an excessive acceleration or higher then they would like G force on braking - your good to go to do every other HTA infraction that this device can't catch? What a load of profit margin.
If the good people of Ontario buy into this s**t in any volumes, the Liberals will make it mandatory.

...but you can skim the lowest risk (top of the market) without incurring all this extra ongoing cost by favouring those without accidents and tickets. So I still don't see the point.

In the words of our esteemed and outstanding leader Wynne, its a "revenue tool". Likely the government will claim its 15% reduction in premiums on the basis that responsible Ontarians just need to take the little box and get the discount, despite the fact that Quebeckers and BC'ers and the rest can get the discount if they also have the little box.
However, Porsche is going to introduce the insurance model, top speed 100KM/h. Called, of course....

The newer service vans where I work have gps and monitering systems. About a month ago someone phoned in to complain about 2 guys in vans driving aggresivley on the dvp. The data on both vans were downloaded. The only thing they found was one van was travelling @110 kmh for around 1/2 a kilometre.
Both drivers had to go for driver training.

I've immigrated to Quebec and only lived in this province but the insurance you guys have to pay is crazy.
My lowly boxster costs me less than 100$/month for full coverage. I wonder what I'd have to pay if I had a 911

Before you get all worked up check with your local insurance broker and the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario and get the right answers with respect to "Telematics".
The major thing with Telematics is who owns the data collected. Also, most every new car coming out now has some form of data logging.
I'm a broker in another part of the country and this is a pressing issue that the associations are trying to deal with.
