its far easier to make the computer happy than to fake a tail pipe reading...just sayin.
The old method was better from a legit air quality point of view.

I believe this applies to any cars that fail the ODB reader test twice and engine light is not on.

- All codes were cleared (Durametric) over winter
- Removed car from storage yesterday and drove ~90km
- Drove another 15km today to warm up, then topped off fuel prior to test

What gives?

Unsure if you have done the test again. Have been through this myself with my 997.

This worked with a OBDII reader from Canadian Tire and test below

1) Start cold engine and idle for approximately 2 minutes, 10 seconds. This checks secondary air injection and evaporative leak detection systems.

2) Accelerate to 20-30 MPH and maintain steady speed for 3 minutes, 15 seconds. This establishes closed loop oxy-sensor operations, response times & switching times.

3) Accelerate to 40-60 MPH and maintain steady speed for 15-20 minutes. This evaluates catalytic converters while oxy-sensor response and switching times are checked.

4) De-accelerate and come to a stop. Idle in gear for 5-6 minutes. This checks evaporative leak detection system.

Remember:
The diagnostic checks above will be discontinued if:
1) Engine speeds exceed 3000 RPM
2) Large fluctuations in throttle position
3) Road speeds exceed 60 MPH

Good Luck.

Just curious, where does one do that with no stop lights? and your not going to do 40 mph on any major hwy.

I'm not knocking this exercise to pass the test, but it seems insane to me that we have to jump thru loops like this to pass a stupid emissions test.

The banks hand out loans and mortgages easier to unqualified people then it is to pass the emissions test it seems.

I agree, was a pita to do. I found out that not all the steps have to be done one after another. I used rural roads then got on the highway for the last one on the slow lane.

Thanks colombiano - I took the car to work the other day and tried my best to follow Greg's steps. I plugged in the Durametric cable last night and the Cat now reports PASS, however Fuel Tank Ventilation shows FAIL (Drive Clean calls it Evaporative System).

Not sure what that means exactly but some suggest re-tightening the gas cap (again), drive 45min and fill up fuel tank then test for ready status. If that doesn't resolve I'll pick up a new gas cap this weekend ($15 from Pelican Parts so I expect $50 from the dealer???)

By the way I'm just assuming this means the Drive Clean check will fail again, meaning I'll have to shell out even more $$$ to go back a 3rd time.

Any other suggestions? Anything I can check before relying on the dealer or indy?

Justin

I read that the evap system sometimes won't ready up if you have a empty or full gas tank, recommend you have 1/3 - 2/3 tank of gas. But that may not help you if yours is ready but failed.

Yeah that's what I'm assuming too, not sure how to cycle the evap test again without clearing the codes/reset, but that voids my retest results and I'll have to pay full price on the next drive clean test.

Your gas cap gasket might have hairline crack. Check it. On the 996 the gasket (only the gasket) is the same as many, if not all othet cars of the same year. Got mine off a Neon for a $1 at the local junk yard. You should be able to match up the gasket at your local Canadian Tire. I bet you all the gaskets since 99 are the same. They have a C shaped profile.

If you can pass all your other tests and one monitor shows not ready you will pass. Were allowed 1 monitor to show not ready.

Is not ready the same as fail? If so then I may be just fine and being paranoid for nuttin'...

Checked the gasket again, looked quickly the other night but didn't have the best lighting. No obvious or hairline cracks, I retightened.. If that was the issue I'm not sure if it will clear the fail code automatically or if it needs to be cleared manually...

I dug up my Drive clean test and Evaporative System wasn't ready and it passed the Emissions test. I forget the exact details now, but if I remember correctly it has to be a certain temperature outside for the Evap test to come ready.

Not ready is not the same as fail. You are allowed one not ready but not allowed to have a fail. Usually the evap system is the one that takes the longest (days sometimes weeks) so the drive clean program allowes one not to be ready. If you only have one not ready you will pass.
