Default ICE STORM

We have had no power since Friday night at 9.
Tried to get hotel last night all sold out.
stayed at inlaws small condo with other family, and no running water on their floor
go downstairs and fill water containers and bring them up
anyways hope everybody is safe and warm, cold weather coming tonight
city looks like a bomb went off with all the down trees
the ice on the trees makes some beautiful images.
my office has full power, water, tv and internet
gonna watch monday night football here tonight probably stay at inlaws
next door neighbor has generator we can plug into with electric heaters etc but need to run extension cord in which may let cold in
we have 2 fireplaces I ran all day yesterday
again hope everybody is safe
I don't know how the pioneers did it.

I camp regularly but with young kids we just car camp.
before kids I would go on multi day canoe and portage trips in Kilarney but plan for it and in warmer temps.
btw I made a mistake power went out Saturday night at 9.

Towns all around you have power & accommodations, food etc.
BTW Dan, I assume you live in a a condo as well because electric heaters will use more power than your furnace with the generator.

As far as I was told "We have it pretty good in Canada"

We take infra-structure for granted and for the most part it works as advertised. When we had a power failure in August we visited neighbours and helped them clean out the garage beer fridge. When it happens in December it can be life threatening and certainly cause for concern.

5 grand or so can get you a backup generator with a transfer switch, Kohler makes residential units and has a sales office in Mississauga I believe. Not only is it a comfort thing, but also keeps sump pumps etc running (think last summer's flood).

Condo's should have backup generators, I'm out of town, but am curious... are your condo's up and running?

In my area, 90 percent of the homes are still out, since Saturday. Our house on the end of the street and a few others still have power.. We have been entertaining some neighbourhood kids since we have heat etc. When I took the dog for a walk, I could hear the hummm of generators everywhere. I think it's time to invest. Dodged a bullet. Christmas is going to be disappointing for many if this continues.

I have a small generator that hooks directly into my natural gas line. Coincidentally enough, I had it installed last week. Enough to operate fridge, heat, hot water and some lighting in bedrooms and bathrooms. Was not cheap but I am always worried about doomsday scenarios... Which is why I also have a gun locker

I live in a large bungalow, but can't hook up furnace to generator without an electrician I think
