Thanks for all the advice. I imported my new '92 Carrera 2 Targa through Lewiston today. I had sent the 72 hour email well in advance and had a response from the US side on that.
Getting across to the export office on the US side looks a bit daunting as you have to cross right in front of about what looks like 10 lanes of cars and trucks coming out of the interview kiosks. I had my passport, original title and the print out of the email confirm. The agent came out and checked the VIN and off I went to the Canadian side. They were great and after paying my money I was on my way with my docs all firmly in hand. Getting the safety and emissions test done tomorrow. I hope that also goes smoothly.
I have to pinch myself to make sure its not a dream, having the 964. Its a beaut!

Brought my car in form the US in 2011.
Check out these sites.

Have all the paperwork sent to the border at least 3 days before.
You will pay 6.1% duty on German cars as well as the 5% GST.
You will pay the local PST when you get your plates.
Don't know about the Quebec borders but Ontario was a snap.
20 minutes on the US side and another 45 on the Canadian side.
If its a newer car, then you have to take it to Porsche for a check and recall clearance letter.
They charge $500 but you have no choice.
Then off to Canadian Tire for an RIV inspection.
Then you can get plates and that's when you pay for any provincial taxes.

When you brought your car to the Canadian side, did they go out and inspect the modifications to the car? I have a rollbar installed, not sure if it will be problem. I'm assuming at Canadian Tire they take a look at DRL and other things like that? Does it need to be completely stock or do they just go over the paperwork and look at the VIN?
Thanks!

Congrats!!! Hope to get mine imported next week finally! )))
Did they check for modifications to your car, or simply just looked at the VIN? I have a rollbar installed in the car as I stated in the above post, I'm wondering whether Canadian Tire will have something to say about that or whether I would be turned around at the border to have it removed.

They don't care.
My trailer has non working lights and other stuff. My M3 has metal out of the rear tires as they were completely bald... They told me they only check what they are told to check. DTRL, VIN and airbag stuff IIRC

Like in my M3 I had to change the tires (obviously) as well as front brakes (even though they were still quite good) to pass province inspection (Alberta). The provincial inspection checks everything but I don't know why they would care about a rollbar... My truck had metal off road bumpers and still passed inspection.

Yea I'm not worried about the roll bar since it increases safety, and is permitted according to rules in Ontario. I just don't want to get questioned when it's going across the border.
As for the English/French airbag stickers, are they just needed after the car is brought into Canada? I'm guessing at the border they won't look for that?
Also, how are taxes paid at the border? Do I need checks on hand? Credit card? How does that work?
Thanks!
