OT: Magnaflow Turboback for a MkIV 1.8T Jetta - daily driver
Hi all,
My Daily Driver / Winter Beater is a 2002 Jetta 1.8T with 250,000km on the clock. I am thinking about getting a new exhaust for it. The original exhaust after 11 years has seen better days. I've had a new flex portion welded on 3-4 yrs ago that is now needing to replaced, the main hanger for the back half broke off a while ago, and I've been just band clamping it in place, but it's starting to buzz again. One of the dual tail pipes fell off about 24 months ago.
Online, I can find a Magnaflow 2.5" (I think stock is 2.25") Turboback for about $710 after taxes. I am thinking about slapping that on. My next emissions test isnt til Feb. 2015, and I hope to keep the car at least til then, maybe longer if passing emissions (OBD2 readiness) won't be too much of a hassle. It looks like I'm putting about 20-25,000km on that vehicle a year.
I know there are a few Ontario MKIV dubbers here, so I'd thought I'd ask.... Imre? others?
It's been running decently, but definitely has a bit of mustyness to it (from a former sunroof leak?) that I'd like to get rid off. I just fixed a powersteering leak (pressure hose $$$), rear suspension bushings (cheap, but a battle).
Thanks,
Peter

I can't speak to that particular exhaust / car combination, but I will recommend that you find someone with the exhaust you're considering and ride in his car around town.
I recently put a downpipe and exhaust on my 1.8T Audi. I went with the APR 'stealth' kit. It's fairly quiet, but you wouldn't mistake it for stock on deceleration. If I drove the car every day, I would probably press the clutch and coast in order to avoid the volume peak at around 2,000 RPM.

Call The Source for VW and ask if they have a good used turbo back system. My father has an '01 1.8T with 460K km and except for the exhaust manifold, it's all original, however the resonator is starting to come apart. If you are only planning to keep the car till emission time then patch up the exhaust the best you can and don't spend any money on it. At 250K km, yours is still fairly low. He bought his with 300K.

I wonder with it being an aftermarket cat, if I'll have problems come emissions time., with it wearing out and throwing CEL' s
