Default Suspension upgrade

Time to upgrade my 993. Currently riding on stock Monroe with H&R sports springs. Don't track. Strictly street driving. Looking for comfy ride with handling improvements. We have lots of potholes in our city.

With limited budget and don't need anything fancy, I'm thinking of Koni FSD /H&R sports spring combo or H&R street coilover.

Searched the forum; couldn't find much info regarding these. Much appreciated if you guys can comment or share your experience?

I would think for street driving the people at Porsche would have got it right from the beginning.
Is it worn out?

check the 993 section, hundreds of threads on the subject. PSS10 is one of the most expensive options and a bit excessive IMHO based on your needs outlined above.

I have PSS9s - fun on smooth roads - but I cringe driving it on downtown roads.

I used to have a 993 with KW V3 clubsports. I changed the entire suspension as well as engine mounts, subframe bushings, etc... (see my signature for details).

Here's my 2cents...

-My setup was amazing -but only after I changed everything and has a proper 'fast street driving' geometry and corner balance setup. It took me a couple of years to really balance the car. In my opinion, you MUST change the wheel carriers if you plan on lowering the car to RS height.

-If you only plan on driving on the street I would go with a basic Bilstein shock and H&R springs and don't lower the car too much... check with Gert at Carnewal... he's an expert at suspension options for 993 as that's his daily driver.

-The best bank-for-the-buck mod I ever did was going to semi solid (Wevo black pillow) engine mounts. Totally transformed the car, especially if your mounts are still original.

Man, I miss my 993

The FSD and the Euro M033 springs are your ticket. While you are there upgrade your sways to the Euro M030 and you will have a sweet ride with non of the issues of the harsher suspension.
I have had 993's for over a decade and been there, done that in many ways.
I had the H&R coilovers, great stuff but too stiff for what you want.
With the Euro stock springs you will have the same spring rate as stock with the lower euro ride height and the sways will flatten your cornering. The FSD's get great reviews so I think that is your ticket.
I have bought my stuff from Gert at www.carnewal.com in Belgium.

This is what you need:

I have the Bilstein PSS10s and really like them. I'm low, but not RS low. I'm
still playing around with the dampening settings ~ I'm not convinced I've
found a sweet spot yet.

Thanks guys for all your inputs.

I understand the Bilstein PSS10s are great but I think they are overkill for my usage.

I like the ride height of my current setup(stock shocks/H&R springs) but a bit on the bouncy side. It is more for look than handling IMHO.

Since I have the H&R springs already, Koni FSD seems to be the most economical alternative but some told me they don't work well with lowered progressive springs like H&R. None seems to have any feedback on that setup.

My mechanic suggested the new H&R street coilover. Not as sophisticated as the PSS10s but much cheaper($1800 on ebay). I couldn't find any review of that neither. My concern is they may be too harsh for my liking.

Maybe I should contact Gert at Carnewal for other suggestions.

I am personally planning to go with DJF1's suggestion on my 95 C2 as it meets my budget
plus my needs. Gert has some great stuff but with shipping, exchange, duties, brokerage blah blah blah it gets expensive fast. I just bought my FSDs from paragon products for $950 US sale on until early June I think and shipped to Buffalo for free!

.
I gave you my first hand experience with the H&R street coilovers. Great, but STIFF.
They were even too much for my liking and I used to frequent race tracks.

From what you are describing, you will not like them. H&R uses Bilstein shocks valved to their specs. Over on the 993 board there is a ton of info on spring rates. H&R street coilovers are about 100lbs stiffer on each corner than stock M030 ( sport factory springs). The nice thing about them is that they keep the factory balance, but as you have witnessed with their springs unless they are matched the ride quality/handling deteriorates. I have taken a ride with your current setup and its not good.

The best setup for my liking ( read stiffer than stock) was Bilstein HD's and M030 springs paired with M030 Sways. IMO nothing beats the factory spring rate balance between front and rear for the street and sport driving.

So getting the right suspension instead of mismatching its worth the extra dollars. Do it once and do it right the first time around. That will save you on the cost of having to redo things just to do things right.

My 02.

I think FD Motorsport carries them. Purchase items from them before and they can mark down prices for import duty. Shipping cost is very reasonable as well.

+1 on Danny's recommendation of the Euro M033 / Koni FSD combination.

I don't recall seeing too much in the 993 subforum about H & Rs, and the search function doesn't seem to be working.
