Default Cheap (ish) 996 GT2s

$70,000-$74,000...what were these new in Canada? $250,000?

These have to be some of the best deals for people wanting a hard core sports car:

No affiliation to any of them but I must admit this got my attention...

GT2 is my Holy Grail......, do they not come with PSM? The center console buttons in the picture of the 3rd car don't show PSM, but the lower one on the left is a symbol I'm not familar with.

No the 996 GT2 don't have PSM or traction control. They are like the 996 GT3 except with twice the torque. Widow maker for those who were not giving the gift. I really contemplated one. But then heard many horror stories for ex owners, with todays tires compound improvements, I believe they could be mastered but I just wasn't ready for it. One second in the rain and it's all over. Ok car to drive at the track with proper sized tires and compounds but not a car to drive on the streets with unknown changing pavement conditions.

10-11 yrs old now. And almost twice what a 996 Turbo would cost you. So the price seems in the ballpark.

Great cars if they check out clean and are driven with a lot of respect.

THANKS Greg, you just blew away my dream car!

I believe GT2 is also only 2WD, which compounds the issue of traction even more.....

They were expensive yes but then 10 years ago the Canadian dollar was about 62 cents to the US dollar
but quite the bargain now that we're on par.

Not that i would ever even consider buying one . Wasnt this car equiped with the first generation of cermic brakes . i heard the first gen had allkins of issue with the rotors cracking etc . You could spend the price of this car half again if you had to fix all that. Just pondering aloud.

Easily switched to steel rotors. The first gen didn't live up to all the hype but for a car that is not driven abusively they would last forever.

Yes it's rwd only. When Walter Rohrl tested the GT2 he insisted that the car needed more rubber. They gave the car 12" wide wheels with 315's on the rear.

Imagine now what it would run at the ring with the PS cups and tire widths that today's GT cars come with.

I had a deposit down on a 3K mile 2002 about a year ago for $80,000 with $40,000 trade-in on mine - did not pull the trigger for several reasons. Including, didn't think it was worth double; and probably more importantly I enjoy my turbo year round - and drive up to Vermont frequently in the winter with skiis on top (with snow tires).

BUT, as the prices come down further, it is very tempting. Considering future GT cars will not have a manual shift... having a 'widow-maker' would be badass.

* Edit, you would think that they would replace the chin spoiler on the red one - its got a big chunk out of the driver's side corner.

Another issue which a PPI might address is that - according to Excellence - this is about the mileage when a heavily tracked car would be ready for a very pricey top end re-build.

It's interesting that they are all at the same mileage...

Indeed a great car that I remember very fondly. An exhilarating test drive many years ago.

This was more an FYI though...without the tilt wheel in the 997 I find the seating position in 996s less than ideal.
