Default Who went from a 996 to a 993?

Always Loved the look and styling of the 993 but years ago opted for a 996 (C2)Cab.

I am a weekend driver and never hit the track. I am looking into getting out of the 996 and finally scratching the itch and locating a clean 993 coupe.

Can anyone shed their experience; pros and con's to having made the switch?

Thanks in advance.

I have never owned a 996 but drove many in my search when i thought the money i had to spend on a Pcar would be better spent on the newer modern 996 vs an air cooled. I thought that was my plan but it all came into focus the first time i drove a 993 - i just new instantly i wanted one. The debates will go on forever and frankly IMHO to each their own but for me it was hands down 993. Look, smell, size, feel, dash, seat of the pants feel and just plain and simple feeling at home in one.

Enjoy the search its half of the fun!

I say if you even think it, then make the switch. The 993 is a collectors car and the 996 is a drivers car.

I agree fully with the above. I was originally going to get a 996/2, but after a nice Rennlist member let me drive his 993 I was pretty much sold. I love the smell, feel etc. of the 993. I guess it really depends on what you like. I kinda seem to gravitate towards old school lately, and the 993 is right up my alley.

PS if I had the money to add to my current stable anytime soon I would buy a 996 Turbo in a heartbeat!

Default 996 to 997 back to 993

All Porsches are great, but my 996TT was too fast and my friend wanted it ,I switched to a 997C4S, but I saw them everywhere, so I went back to a 993C2S that I love, especially the sounds from the air-cooled engine.
I try and drive it every summer day.

Had a chance to get a 993 C4S in deep blue, my all time favorite car/colour - was a bit more than the 996 at the time, had more miles and not as good shape, hindsight, it was a real good deal then. It is still on my wish list for sure.
I'm with the others, if you are thinking about the switch and find the right car, go for it!

I went from a 2003 996 coupe to a 1997 993 cab. The 996 is a better handling more powerful car. I used to take it to the track which was a lot of fun but got time consuming and expensive. Its much easier to go fast in the 996 than in the 993. However, the 993 just seems more solid and sounds great especially with the RSR mufflers I have on it. I was out yesterday letting her rev a bit on the 427 and just thinking to myself I love this car. Not sure if costs are a factor for you but I think it will cost more to maintain the 993 than 996 not taking into account the IMS factor. At least this is my experience so far since the 993 is older and needs parts replaced and changed which could get expensive.

The best Porsche is the one you own..
As far as going into an older Porsche (993) you may want to look at the 964 as another option to consider, especially since you plan on using it as a recretional driver with no track duty reduces the need for better ergo and handling. I personally love the older air cooled Porsches with a hint of gas fumes adds character and charm.
Ensure you complete a full PPI before pulling the trigger.. There was a great series of PPI articles in the last 3 editions of Excellence magazine which would be worth reading.

good luck

I went from a 993 to a 997 although I still have both. I use the 997C4S all year round but still havent sold the 993 (its currently in the garage getting a full polish etc). I had listed the 993 last year but was half hearted about it and still it sits in my garage. The 997 is way faster and more comfortable as a year round car (even as a cab) but the 993 has that intangible and is great as a weekend car which is what your after. The 993 cab is the ultimate summer car!! And with the Fister exhausts on it, it has the meanset sound of any Porsche I have heard!!

A test drive is all it takes to make a 993 the clear choice. Test drive a 993tt and you will have another big decision. Spend the extra $$$ now, or later along with the HST and other transfer costs when you recognize your mistake!

If it wasn't for my need of rear seats, I would be back in a 993 in a heart beat. It's much more of a drivers car. A tiny bit under powered but still fun. Spirited driving was much more fun in the 993 then my 996tt. The 993 just feels special.
