2001 996 C2 Front Wheel Bearing Replacement
Hi everyone,
Has anyone on here changed the front wheel bearings on their own? I'm planning on doing this in a few weeks and just wanted to know if anyone has any tips? Also, does anyone know if Canadian Tire has the rent-a-tool program still, I need to borrow a ball-joint removal tool.
Also, if anyone has a DIY other than the one on Renntech please post it!

Don't have a DIY for you but will need a puller/press of sorts to remove/install bearing, the ball joint can be removed without a 'tool', apply downward pressure on control arm near the partially unbolted balljoint(say with a prybar) and with increasing force(don't go superman on it) hit the upright close to the where the balljoint end is inserted with a hammer, ball joint should pop out pretty quick..

glad to help,same technique works for tie-rods/ any taper fit joint...for install do the opposite; apply force against the joint towards the upright/socket when tighenting the nut/bolt, will stop the the balljoint from spinning inside of itself

Does anyone know someone who will press in the new bearing into the wheel carrier, I don't have a shop press. Alternatively, is there any other way to do this without purchasing expensive tools?

wait a minute here .. dpends on the style of bearing to determine what you are doing .. any pics ?
a bearing race can be tapped in with the abover mentioned method using brass drifts which tend to be softer than what you are pressing it into .
if it is the newer style bearing assembly it can be very tricky .. throw up a few pics of what you are dealing with .
I do think the loan a tool program is in effect .. at parts source too..

996 uses a uni-bearing, the temp method is generally just to help the bearing move, will likely need a rent a tool or a long bolt with a washer/plate that goes over the back of the carrier and the outside race of the bearing and then clamp down..

if it is the type of bearing i am thinking of it can be very tricky .. you can press the bearing into the housing, but then you have to press the hub into the inne race and that is ricky without popping the whole bearing to pieces .. went through 3 bearings till i figured that out

Given all the same:
-taper bearings:messy but easy to replace, frequent adjustments needed, cheap
-uni-pack/bearing:longest life, hardest to replace, no adjustments needed, medium price
-one piece hub/bearing assembly: good life(not as good as uni-pack), cleanest/'easiest' to replace, no adjustments needed, most expensive
