I can't argue with that;-)

I don't have the skills, space, time or interest to service/repair/maintain my own cars. I'd like do but it's just not the case. So the costs are quite significant.

Is he genuinely interested in the 7-series (ie before the car showed up) or is it just an opportunity that came about?

If it's just an opportunity that "seems like a great deal" - I would urge him to forget it and find a car he's passionate about. That's my opinion anyway.

He is in his 20s and has loved the e38 since he saw the transporter movie as a kid. I'm sure he has been doing his homework and going through the bimmer forums in fact he introduced me to RL and sometimes uses my account to read up on Porsches. He just bought the car today for $2200.

$2,200!?! At that amount he's won if it runs for a year.

Nice. Now, first thing first, get a hold of a good used battery and try to get the engine running and then go around the block and see if the transmission is ok. Of those two are fine, the rest is easily fixable.

...$2200 is about what the dismantlers have paid for a good example with running engine and tranny so... good score.

Congratulations to him, it sounds like he is passionate about the car - I know how proud he must be!

Dan the reliability of the E38 is pretty good when compared to Audis, they have their weaknesses as do Porsches. All are good if maintained properly. IMO People tent to be more passionate over sports cars so they have less of a problem with maintenance, in the case of a sedan they tend to treat them as appliances and let the maintenance slide, once you start doing that it start adding up fast.

Yup a good Idea, I've had CAA Premium for years but never actually used it.

In 20 years, I only needed CAA for my car once. All the other times, I used them to tow projects cars home. Cars now days are very ralible, they don't break down on the side of the road like theh used to. If he learns the ins and outs of this car, and I'm sure he will, he won't need CAA. Instead, get him a Jobmate comact, but very complete, tool kit/box from CT instead. I carry one in my DD and use it when I go hunting for parts at the junk yard.
