Well in my particular case, I left the car there for 2 weeks while I decided what to do with it so I can't blame them for having it outside. There was an RS 4.0 in the parking lot too that was there for service

Believe it or not, if your car is in for service and there's an accident, the claim goes through your insurance and the shop pays the deductible if it was their fault. It isn't their fault hail hit any more than it was my fault. That's what comprehensive insurance is for.
I am not sure that this is correct. why do shops have insurance anyways? leaving at dealer is different than parking in mall...care and control is different in this case. How did they get $7000? how many dents? can paintless guy fix it?
sorry about your bad luck. something to think about...my experience is bad luck comes in threes...hopefully you have had your third already otherwise look out.

It's not like parking at the mall at all.

He checked his property into the dealer and handed them the keys. They were negligent in having the car outside during a hailstorm, for which there was probably warnings of.

The whole thing sucks!!!

My rebuild was 12k plus tax. Included R+R engine, complete rebuild, tune up, new IMS, lots of internal and external parts, rings, bearings etc, plus 4 oil changes and 12 month warranty. I now have 22km on it after 3 seasons.

The dealer is not responsible for hail damage. It is an act of god and beyond their control. Their responsibility is only for damage they cause while working on a car. No dealership has indoor storage for all cars in for service.

Except for the cars in the showroom, this particular dealership had all their new and used cars damaged by the hail storm. Some of the hail stones were as large as baseballs.

I don't know....that $7K more than pays for the removal and install of a Porsche goodwilled engine...which would cost close to $20K. I would much rather have than in my car than a $6000 used special I found online....

****ty situation. Best of luck!!

UPDATE.

Took the motor apart. Despite what the dealer ship told me, the metal found in the engine was FERROUS and is most likely from the Intermediate shaft bearing. GRRRRRR

If I had know this I would have pushed for Porsche to have done something....

If the IMS bearing design is same as the 996, the flange is easily removed. Only held on by three 6mm bolts (10mm socket) and a nut in tge middle. Take it off and you'll see the bearing.

Yeah, just had a look. It isn't visibly bad, but when I give a little pry on it, it jiggles around. Not good.

You (dealer) mentioned that the IMS bearing is serviceable. Therefore in order to take out the bearing the engine block need to be splitted open. Is this what you did to examine the bearing?

can you also report on the followings:

1. on the plastic seal, it is marked "6305"?, the means it is the large single row bearing.
2. was the plastic seal still intact?
3. what is the condition of the ball bearings.
4. can you take a few pictures showing the damage.

thanks

Bearing looks fine. It isn't serviceable but the same style cover is there but the bearing is larger than the hole therefore cannot be removed without splitting the motor.

I pried on the shaft a little and it wiggles all over the place. The seal is still in place. I MAY split the case. Haven't decided.

When you pried on it, only the centre wobbled and not the entire shaft? If it chain didn't skip and the valves are still ok. This could be fixable. Give it a shot and take your time.

Noooope.

Whole bearing wobbled. It's still in one piece. The engine lost oil pressure. That isn't a good sign. Still, if the crank is in good shape and the heads are okay I might be able to salvage a little more by parting out!

once the IMS flange is removed, the IMS bearing which is attached to the IMS shaft is now flowing. Actually it is suspended by the timing chains. Can you spin the center bolt and see if there are any play with the outer part of the bearing.
