I have used Hagerty (www.hagerty.ca) for the past 2 years, and just renewed my policy.
It's well priced for the amount I use my 911, and although there are restrictions , there are not ridiculous restrictions.... I remember Silver Wheels telling me that I had to call them to ask approval to take my car somewhere overnight... like visiting a friend and sleeping over. Who the hell do they think they are? My wife?
Just thought I'd mention it as there are always questions around who is the best classic car insurer. I think Hagerty is relatively new to Canada.
Thaks JAmes maybe its time for me to call them .. i dont drive my 911 much thesed ays so i may as well move them over .. do i need an appraisal? .. i cant be bothered to do that so i havent bothered to change ins.
I have a 19A policy for my car. I had to provide and appraisal and there are very few limitations. I pay around $35 a month. Yes. You read that correctly.
Hagerty owns Silver Wheels now. The bought them recently. Silver Wheels says lots of stuff, but if you read the actual policy, none of that's in there. I'm not sure how they can enforce a lot of it.

It has to be appraised if you want more than beater car value coverage.
I think the only other restriction is you have to have access to another vehicle as your primary mode of transportation. I called them earlier this year. There are 2 drivers in my house (including me) and we have 2 vehicles one of which is my 964. Both drivers need a car to be considered primary use so in my example, I could not use haggerty/silver wheels unless I bought another car.

This is correct that Hagerty owns Silver Wheels now. I had looked into Silver Wheels in the past but found there were too many restrictions. They seem to have relaxed these restrictions now that Hagarty and Silver Wheels are together. I signed with them this year. My premiums are $395.00/year. As for the appraisal, you need one if you want a specific value assigned for loss. They basically told me that without an appraisal my car is currently valued at $25,000.00 and I could accept that or get an appraisal. My choice. I was OK with the value assigned (1992 964 C2 Cab) so didn't bother with the appraisal.
I had to provide proof of insurance on other vehicles for myself and my wife (a work supplied vehicle with proof of coverage was OK).
I have no experience with claims with them but definitely their price and liability coverage are great.
I found in the past that Silver Wheels does not allow you to remove road coverage during the winter months when the vehicle is not driven. I am spending approx. $2k/yr. for the my limited use which is cheaper than what I was quoted by Silver Wheels. This is at an appraised value in excess of $100k. I have a 19A policy with Aviva.
That's true, their coverage is year round, but I've never heard of them quoting more than 2000/year. I'm paying a tenth that! (I think I'm $225/year). And at those lower rates, there's no point removing it in the winter. But most of us aren't talking about $100k+ cars. At that price, yeah, I imagine you're going to be paying a hefty premium for insurance, no matter who you're with.

Mine's appraised for a little more plus tax Glenn and I'm paying under $1,200 a year. It's with Aviva but through Silver Wheels. You must have a much lower deductable.

It also depends on where you live, Ronnie - In any case we'll have to talk, thanks.

I'm with SilverWheels as well. Yes you do have to have proof of a daily driver.
A higher quoted rate could also depend on whether the car is considered "modified". Mine is, and it caused my rates to be 3 times what they would have been if it had been classified "stock"
At what age can a car be deemed 'classic' to qualify for this type of insurance ? Hypothetically, if I were to garage my '99 996 and only bring it out on weekends and drive either the wife's car or get a third for commuting purposes could I then plan on being able to have 'classic' car insurance ?
A 99 not old enough to be a classic yet (20-25yrs I recall), but if you did do that, your car would be pristine looking and have low mileage when it WAS old enough
