Default Ignorant foreigner car care query

Hi all,

My car needed a wash this morning. There was a frost here in Vancouver but I didn't think it was particularly cold. I had a bucket of sudsy warm water at hand and my lambswool mitt. I hosed the car of and it started to freeze - a bit colder than I thought (backed up by the sheet of ice starting to form around my feet). I finished the wash using the warm water to help move the ice.
I looked at my car in the sun this afternoon and there fine scratches all over the panels. Is that from the ice? Surely ice can't scratch my car!! Tell me if I've just created myself a huge polishing job!!

Cheers Ben....fresh from Oz

Any Pics ? From what you are describing it sounds like the water was warm during the washing with the mitt, so I can't see that causing scratches.

I washed my car in sub zero temps once too.

My bet is that those are not scratches but just frozen water.

Unfortunately it was dry and warm this afternoon when I saw the car. I can always hope that next wash they are gone...but I don't think they will be. It looked like fine grit was in the wash mitt. Of course they could have been there since I bought the car, it hasn't been dry and sunny before today!!

Cheers, Ben

I suggest you take the car to Rod's Exotic Auto Spa at 188 Pemberton in North Vancouver. Telephone 604-833-6931 (his cell) and have Rod take a look. He does excellent detailing and polishing work and is thoroughly familiar with working with Porsche's and their paint. Tell him John with the 996 TT Cab and BMW 650 sent you. If anyone can help you it's him.

That's what the scratches look like but I would swear I didn't have any. Clean water and second wash with that mitt, haven't dropped it and the car wasn't that dirty. If hand polishing won't get it out I'll probably pay someone (was planning to do that in spring anyway).

Cheers Ben
