Separates the men from the boys now doesn't it? It is easy to drive fast in the dry..less so in the wet.

Thread drift warning...

Gilles was 1.4 seconds faster in the dry (3rd on the grid to Depailler's 11th) and was 6.2 seconds faster during this wet weather practice session held on Friday morning. I was there...

I've forgotten how much the track changed.

By the time the teams got to Watkins Glen for the last race of the 1979 season, Jody Scheckter and his Ferrari team had already clinched the Driver's and Constructor's championships. It would be the South African's only title. The show at The Glen was stolen, however, by Scheckter's Canadian teammate, the legendary Gilles Villeneuve. He cruised to victory by a comfortable margin on the rainy track, and took second in the Championship.

On Friday, the rain was heavy enough all day that only a few cars even took the track, and fewer still made any serious attempt at a lap time. Of the six that did actually record a time, Villeneuve was fastest by over nine seconds! Scheckter, second fastest, thought he was mad, but was also quite in awe of the Canadian's performance in the conditions.
Magnificent Maniac! Who needs a front wing or see anything? Hah!

Watkins Glen - 1979 - 1st place. I miss this guy...

Although Gilles accomplishment in that Watkins Glen practice was legendary, this video is actually of the Canadian Grand Prix practice in 1978, with Depailler driving a Tyrell 008.

This was to be the first race that Gilles won. As for Depailler, he finished a pretty credible 5th after battling back from some technical problems

Sorry - I assumed people could recognize that the video was from Montreal so I didn't post a title under it. Unfortunately there is no video of his famous win at the Glen other then some rumored 5 sec clip I haven't been able to find but has been referenced by a few people on different forums.

Hey, please accept my apologies TW... I didn't read your post correctly!

I thought you were referring to the video as being from Watkins Glen, but upon re-reading your post, I see what you meant. Sorry for the confusion!
