Sorry to hijack this thread and a bit off topic but has anybody imported a car (I'm thinking 993) from Germany?

In my situation, I've owned the car for 6+ years and now thinking of taking it back to Canada with me. Would it not count as part of my personal possessions and therefore exempt from tax?

No you still pay tax and duty, since the vehicle has not paid any entry duties for Canada or HST. When registering a car with the MTO, you pay taxes regardless unless you are gifting a currently Canadian registered car to a family member. All the info you need us on the RIV website.

With all due respect to Adam ant...I think he is incorrect and when you move you may bring it with you (maybe even dutyfree) when you are living abroad for extended period of time. you may need to do some inspections.

I believe it's duty/tax free if it's your personal vehicle and you're moving here, with all your other possessions. Call CBSA to be sure.

I have 2 Porsches to import to Canada this summer and will be going through the same.....bought them here in the US while living down here. They are not exempt from duty and taxes. The only advantage of buying them when you live outside Canada is that the 1st $10,000 is not taxable. Also certain provinces don't make you pay provincial taxes since they consider it your personal effects if they where plated in the other country. As of this past summer, Ontario wasn't making Canadians pay provincial taxes so in my case I will only be paying GST & Duty on the rest of the value above $10,000 (there are a few other small fees like RIV, inspections, etc).

This is why I have 2 cars to import and maybe a 3rd to add to the family. Just got my 1st one 2 years ago and love them so much that I am taking advantage of the prices here........

Wabbit is correct - see http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...f5087-eng.html

"Value limitation (CAN$10,000)

Any single personal or household item (including an automobile) that is worth more than CAN$10,000 on the date you import it, is subject to applicable duty and taxes on the amount that is over CAN$10,000. The item must have been acquired after March 31, 1977."

Will Canadian Tire do an emissions test and Ontario safety check when doing the RIV inspection or is best to have them done elsewhere beforehand?

Yes, CT can do it all.

I would be very cautious using CT for safety. RIV is fine no tools needed. some CT have 16 year old kids working and don't even know the proper jacking points on these cars. you are much better off with someone who knows these cars well imho.
what did you buy?

can't speak for any other CT but I took my GT3 import to the Ogilvie Rd store in Ottawa for all the inspections and Adam took care of me very well. He's a rennlister (atr911) and knows his way around a P-car very well.

well CT in Toronto appears very different from Ottawa. Seems like Adam runs a tight shop but can't say the same for CT here. few years ago I took my suv for a tire repair; they couldn't fix it cause they said hole was on sidewall which they couldn't show me so I took it to a tire guy I dealt with and after noticing the lugnuts were finger loose the hole was in the middle of tread, which he fixed no problemo.

I would be very cautious about using CT...Turbodan
+ 1.

My tech told me one of his importing clients spent a few thousand dollars unwinding some work that a local CT had done on a Boxster. I don't think CT can get into too much mischief on the RIV inspection, but you want to get a specialist for the out of province inspection. Best bet is to use a Porsche specialist who is also a certified inspector.

Can anyone tell me if, when importing a car that is more than 15 years old, I still need a recall letter?
