Used parts and duty
I know that duty and taxes apply to car parts we bring across the border from the US into Canada. However, does the same apply for used car parts that have a value above your personal exemption? Does it make a difference if the used parts manufactured in the US versus foreign?

In reality if it was made outside of North America then yes you have to pay duty, evne on used parts but, most of the time they don't charge you. It's a real hit and miss.

There is duty on car parts unless the vendor fills out a certificate of origin stating that the part was made in the US ...
Often times with USPS it will slip through but if it comes UPS or FEDEX you will pay an extra 4.5% import duty on top of the CDN taxes !
I imported a roll bar for my car from DAS Sport and the bitch at customs phoned the company to make sure it was manufactured in the US,do you believe it ??? All that so they can charge me an extra $15.00 dollars ...
If you order expensive parts, ask the vendor to add a certificate of origin to the invoice, then they won't question you at customs !
Cheers !

Dwane, At the border, I've only ever paid tax on my tires. Somehow, I think it's less than 13%, too, but I haven't done it in a couple of months. At any rate, it's so little that there's no reason not to just declare what you have. Like Clive, I've been waved through a few times when they tell me that I don't have to pay, too.

Anytime I declare over $ 80 I have to go inside and pay. Once I separated the GM parts receipts from the Porsche ones and the guy at the desk said, 'you're not going to make me look that up are you?. I said no sir. No duty only GST/RST, and thats been the routine ever since.

Tax on used parts?
So it's pretty clear about duty. What about tax on used parts? Does it apply and if so how much? Is it only on the portion above your personal exemption?
BTW, thanks for the great info.

That said most Canadian border agents wouldn't bother to ask if the tires are NFTA exempt or not, unless they had a bad day or you give them a reason to dig deeper.
