Yes, as long as it's older than 15 years of age, no RIV form / fees required. I had no trouble what so ever importing my 951. Although, the guy at the custom end up being a huge fan of my work and we chatted small talk about it the whole way while he was stamping the papaer work.

Yup, you are 100% right.

My borther brought in an '89 Bentley Turbo R less than a month ago and it was just as easy as when I brought my 928 in 11 years ago.

You may be thinking about what the seller if the car I bought suggested.

I was concerned about paying for the car three days before taking possession of it (from some guy on Autotrader). This is in regards to having to provide a proof of sale to the border 3 days in advance.

The seller suggested that he could drive it to Toronto to do the transaction here so that I could take possession at the same time I paid. Then I could go to the border to clear the car 3 days later.

No fake story. No trying to cheat taxes or duty.

At Lewiston, all you need to provide in advance is the VIN so it was a moot point in the end.

Just remember, it's 15 year to the date of manufacture and not model year.

Right now vehicles manufactured in Oct. 1996 or later are RIV exempt and can come in without any modification. However, besides a standard safety inspection, they must also pass the e-test for that model.

Nahh... it's not you. The story was something along the lines of giving some money to a buddy in the states, then he buys the car and re gifts it back to him to avoid duty and taxes....... or some variation of this.

I remember many years ago (early 90's) my friend bought a 66 fairlane and lied about the purchase price at the border.
They put him in the interview room for some stew time and scared the **** out of him.
He eventually told the truth, the results.....
They charged him the correct amount of tax and fined him the equivalent of what he tried to rip them off for.

Probably way different now, but there was no impound process because he paid his fines.
