Quebec provincial police stopped a man driving 240 kilometres an hour on Ville-Marie Expressway in Montreal in one of the worst cases of speeding in Canadian history.
The car was caught on radar in a 70 km/h zone at 3 a.m. ET, and police stopped the vehicle just before it entered the tunnel.
Police spokeswoman Geneviève Bruneau said the man's licence has been suspended.
"The man who was driving the car received a ticket of $2,598 and he also received 42 demerit points," Bruneau added.
Bruneau said that normally, drivers can only be assesed a maximum of 15 demerit points, but new provincial laws allow more points to be taken away from particularly egregious offenders.
She said the driver was sober and co-operated with police. His car was towed away and he will have to pay towing costs to get it back.
Bruneau was not sure of the make of the vehicle.
Thanks Derek!

MONTREAL - Provincial police say they stopped a car along Highway 720 eastbound early Friday after the driver clocked in at 240 km/h.
The BMW had reportedly been stolen by the man behind the wheel, who works as a valet at a nearby hotel.
Sûreté du Québec Sgt. Geneviève Bruneau would not confirm that information, but said police "are not denying it either". The driver pulled over shortly before the entrance to the Ville-Marie tunnel, she said, and there was no police chase involved.
The man's joyride earned him a $2,598 ticket and 42 demerit points, Bruneau added.
"(Excessive speeding) is something that has happened in the past," she said. "That's why we've introduced these much tougher laws."
On a first offence, officers have the power to impose stiff fines and double the amount of demerit points normally given, Bruneau said, and can suspend the offender's licence immediately for seven days. A second offence will result in an immediate suspension of at least 30 days.
However, the Société de l'assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) will automatically revoke a driver's licence or the right to obtain a licence when 15 or more demerit points have accumulated on a person's record.

Hmm..42 points...wonder who long before he gets them down to a reasonable number?....sounds like a ban for years. Of course, he might be in the slammer for the theft ,and he will not need his permit there......

near the end it says on a first offence they can increase the fine or points????aren't you supposed to be rewarded for a clean record not face a stiffer penalty for having a clean record?

Re stop or not - I got pulled over approx. 6 years ago on my bike (BMW R1100S) a few miles from the Bancroft OPP detachment (which of course I wasn't aware of at the time). The first thing the officer said was "thanks for stopping - most guys on bikes don't bother" He gave me a small ticket as if memory serves me correctly I was in Fantino walk home territory. He then proceeded to tell me where all of the other traps were for the day. Probably the only somewhat pleasant OPP experience I have had.
