Shifting gear in cold weather
Is it normal for gears to be harder to shift in the winter.. started car this morning for 10 mins, and tried shifting, it's fairly stift and hard to shift, especially reverse...
is this normal and if so, will it get smoother once the car/weather warms up?

Yes it's normal. Idling the car for 10 mins will not warm up your transmission; you need to drive to warm it up. if 1st is hard to engage when cold, pull it into 2nd then move it up into 1st.

While I would say it is not normal for most cars.... it seems to be accepted as 'normal' for a Porsche. My Boxster is nowhere near silky smooth as our Honda or VW when shifting below 5C. It does get better after a few km of driving and several shift changes.

Until the fluid is warm, I have to double clutch (or shift very deliberately) when shifting from 1st to 2nd in my 996. The synchros are new, so I attribute it to the transmission and fluid chracteristics.

Aren't there synthetics that have greater viscosity? Not grabbing 1st because the box is stiff is sooo like outta the past. Not acceptable.

Mine has always been harder to shift when its cold. Now also I find downshifting from 3rd to 2nd under high rpm when cold sometimes won't go in and if I am not really careful or double clutch I can find myself out of gear going around a corner.

It may be time for you to consider an automatic then

I noticed this on all my cars of course.... It's that first shift into 1st, and 2nd that you really feel. After that it should smoothen out.
I like to let the car warm up for about 2 min max. While doing this, I go through the first three gears while the car is stationary.
Then take off slowly and I drive in 1st until I reach the stop sign. Then back to neutral, then 1st again and when i make the shift to 2nd I make sure it's very precise. After that everything is normal. Every manual car has this symptom. Just wait till the gearbox is a little warm and that's it...

I have a Mazda 3 daily driver that sits outside, and it's an ordeal just to shift it into reverse when it's cold (below -5) to get out of my driveway. I finally started backing the car into my driveway when I get home from work so I can skip struggling to get into reverse in the morning (until I get to work and the engine is warm).
But yes, the remaining gears are rough when it's cold. I had a 325xi before, and it was a little stiff when cold, but not near as bad as this Mazda...definitely a DD car choice I regret (at least the RS 60 makes up for it)
PS - Congrats on the car!
