So I was just watching the speed channel, and a Castrol Synthetic oil commercial
comes on, and they say "8 times more protection than Mobil 1"
Can they legally false advertise, or is it really 8 times better?

they're not allowed to advertise it as such otherwise. and they wouldn't if they couldn't get away with it. think about how letigious the states are.

If you check their website you will see that the 8X claim is based on one industry test, (Sequence IVA test), which does not pertain to most current engine designs... The test data does not indicate if there is any advantage as far as actual reduced wear from having an 8X test duration vs. simply passing the IVA test sequence. It's a pass/fail test. So 8X pass = pass.
This is sort of akin to an air filter company that claims their air filter flows 500% more air than an OE Porsche air fliter, but with the OE Porsche filter not causing any flow restriction to the induction system, the potentially higher flowing air filter does exactly nothing but empty your wallet.
If it sounds too good to be true... it is.

Oil and metal is compulcated. The ideal is a lubricant barrier between the bearing surfaces and guess what? It doesn't exist. IMO the best approach is frequent changes of filters and oils. How you abuse the surfaces determines the interval of exchange. Personally I go for frequent changes.

What matters in most of our cars is ZDDP. I called Castrol and they wouldn't tell me what levels are in the new Edge product so I wouldn't consider it for my car. They did indicate the Syntec 20w-50 has a minimum 1200 ppm ZDDP, which is the same level as the M1 15W-50. However, it's a little thick for our cold climate. According to our on-line survey, about 85% of the rennlist guys with 993tt's use the latter. M1 V Twin 20W-50 has 1600 ppm and lots of guys in the US use it for that reason even though it's motorcycle oil.
