Default HST Implications when Importing from the US

The 993 Hunt Begins...

This will be my second cross border purchase, but I am unable to find up-to-date info on the Canada Border Services Agency Website re: HST

http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publicati...-eng.html#s4x2

Anyone have knowledge or experience in this area?

What is incorrect in this calculation and where does HST fit in? Am I missing anything here?

Canadian Price = US Purchase price + exchange rate delta + 6% duty (if less than 25 years old) + GST at border + RIV process and fees (if less than 15 years old) + letter of compliance from Porsche + PST at provincial licensing office.

Thanks,

My understanding is that 5% tax is payable at the border and then 13% HST at licensing, but then you get a 5% refund either on the spot or by mail. I will be importing through Lewiston bridge on Friday/Monday this week. Will update you then.

I'd like to know about the new process as well...

I thought you only needed a clearance letter from Porsche if the vehicle is CPO or Factory Warrantied; anything else is not necessary.. Is this true?

During my importation last summer a letter was NOT required from Porsche, only if it has warranty.

You need a recall clearance letter from Porsche in every instance - warranty or not. RIV requires this. And it's 6.1% duty and $100 A/C tax James.

Correct me if I am wrong: No letter is required at the border, but you will need it for the RIV to give you the federal inspection form (form 2) which you need to take to Cananal Tire.

Some details can be found at www.riv.ca

I just imported mine and HST slapped me, but not that hard...

Type in import calculater through a google search and that will give you all the numbers/figures you need!

HST on a 40K car will be around $300.

Recall letter can be obtained at a Porsche dealer in the states. So once you get your PPI, remember to ask for one and they will print it off right from the PCNA site. Also ask them to change the temp and Miles to KM. If your car is a 997, then ask them to activate the DRL's as well...

RIV fee and AC fee together will be $330.

Good luck!

HST on 40K car should be $5200.
Where did you import the car... at Oka?!?!?
If you did only pay $300 HST on a 40K car, then I would go and buy a lotto ticket immediately, as your luck may still be with you!

I went through Alexandria Bay port.

Total was $4,800 at the border. For some reason they told me HST only was 300$ extra from regular duty fee's....
