Any thoughts on what sort of 911 (if any) one can pick up for less than $25k I'm trying to convince my father to pick one up. Car would be a weekend driver and possibly some DE days. Thanks....
This is a (very) rough ballpark, assumes driver-condition cars, non-turbo, non-cabrio. The lower end of the price range might need some attention to things like clutch, oil leaks, etc. but shouldn't need a full-on engine rebuild, the upper end should already have these issues addressed, or be of mileage that wouldn't cause concern for such issues.
There are tons of examples to be found outside these ranges, but I think you'll find that the majority of fair to good cars would be around these prices.
There's a sort of unwritten rule for air-cooled Porsches (not including 993s): they're all $20K cars. Pay it up front or pay it after purchase, but that's what they cost.
I disagree with the 964 pricing above . (Nine11)^^^^^ You have a really nice car and I think your asking price is spot on in your ads....maybe a few k higher. As stated in your other posts. I would not let my low mileage go for any less than $30k.
I can understand the pricing above for a car that needs a rebuild and is a 5 footer car, not a pristine car or track ready vehicle.
Thanks all - may try and convince him to look at a 99' 996 currently in the trader. I guess making a pre July 1 purchase effectively reduces the price by 5%. Anything of note to look for in particualr for this model/year that could be noticed pre-PPI? Thanks..

I'd suggest driving a few air cooled cars and a few water cooled ones too. They do feel different and one may hit the spot more than the other.

Thanks Jeff...your targa is a clean one and the prices do vary a bit....it's kind of a dogs breakfast sometimes when you're trying to determine value of these things, they are hard to come by and clean ones are very difficult to find.

The '99 has the 3.4L engine doesn't it? There were and have continued to be lots of problems with that engine. Someone here probably knows more than I the specifics...
Check with Domenic at EU Autowerks regarding the 3.4 motor. I have a 2001 3.4 (maintained by Autowerks since warranty expiration). I did ask about replacing the intermediate shaft as I have read many Rennlist posts about potential failures.
Domenic told me that the 2001 model year received upgrades and is generally more reliable than previous model years if maintained properly.
The OP may want to check the current and previous issues of Excellence Magazine. There is a detailed series on the M96 engine (3.4 and 3.6) describing issues and fixes.
My advice would be to have EU Autowerks conduct a thorough pre-purchase inspection of any car you are considering purchasing...inexpensive insurance in my opinion.

I think you hit some kind of huge nail with a big hammer. Excellent description! Seems so true, now that I'm in the Pcar game. Primarily why I chose the Porsche over the Ferrari. I was looking at older sub $20K ferrari's that would have likely need $10-20K in maintenance!!
Thanks for the advice all - the 996 I located had the front valance re-sprayed and I believe the rad repaired due to a 'minor' incident. Doesn't sound so minor to me so I'll keep searching. Cheers.
