I stocked up on the Mobil 1 0W-40 last Sunday at CT when it was on sale for something like just under $7.00 ea. I bought 20L's enough for 2 oil changes and a spare or two.

The shopping cart was filled with so much oil the spouse said I should just buy shares in the company instead! But hey, $3 bucks off a L is a big savings I couldn't turn down.

Of course it drops another $7 a jug since I just grabbed 2 M1 15w- 50's jugs last week at CT too.

So what's the right oil? I thought that I should only use 0-40. Is that not the case? I don't drive during snow months.

This is a subject that has been beaten to death on Rennlist from what I see. I go by the manual but even that can change depending on how old your car is. Some manuals list an oil for your car no longer produced / or there are newer API/SFI grades that are *now* recommended. Somewhere around here there is a new Porsche oil chart for approved oils and or on Renntech. I don't drive my car in the winter either but from I've been told the 0 factor in the 0/40 oil isn't as much for cold/winter condition driving as much as for faster flow at start up for even summer temp's. I guess because of start up wear protection and the fact that Porsche use oil squirters for the piston crowns and also for use in the Vario Cam system (where there are small orifices) they need the water like 0 /40.

Some of the older 911's and 356's use Brad Penn brand as a sub for an oil no longer made as air cooled engines require oils that won't break down under higher heats among other reasons. It's all very 'Dark Art's' if you ask me.

I used 15-50 for 1 year. I noticed lifters were ticking and also cold starts on cold mornings had smoke at startup.

Went back to 5-40 and cold start smoke has gone away and lifters don't tick.

Here's what I've gleaned from various threads and the manual. It's different for the tt's and NA's. tt's have GT1 SOHC engine and turbos and use either M1 15W-50 or M1 V Twin 20W-50. Latter has slightly more ZDDP but is generally felt to be too thick for our cooler climate. Former is formulated more specifically for high performance turbo engines according to the label. Neither should smoke or anything else undesireable in tt's. Have not found any disciplined analysis and expect whatever is recommended in the manual is fine.
