Default Duty rate for parts

Hi guys, anybody happens to know what would be the duty rate for car parts? I am thinking of buying a front bumber from GT Racing (so it will be made in the USA!) and I will only have been more than 24 hours but less than 48 when I'll cross back so won't be able to claim any exemption. Thank you,

George

This is from my CBSA invoice two weeks ago.

Auto parts, classification no. 8716.90.20.39, no duty, just GST + PST = 13%

Webbie, I think you got lucky. The 8716 header applies to "Trailers and semi-trailers; not mechanically propelled; and parts thereof". Unless you are putting trailer parts on your car, the Customs agent misclassified your products
Bottom line, not all auto parts are Duty free.

Anything manufactured in the US or Mexico should be duty free. Often German parts don't get charged duty if they're coming from the states - seems to be hit or miss. I had a big order from Pelican shipped to a depot in Niagara Falls and didn't get charged duty on anything, even though many of the parts were made in Germany.

I was bringing at least 10 different items across the border myself. I printed out a long item list for declaration purpose. Probably take him at least half an hour to do it properly, so he just dumped them in one single category. 5 minutes later and I am out of there. Gotta love paperwork.

I brought some wheels over and he said "ahhh, let's just call them car parts." no duty that day for me.

Based on years of buying auto and motorcycle parts and accessories in the US:

No duty no matter where it is made.

13% on the Canadian dollar value of the items.

Tire are duty free if made in the US, otherwise a 6.1% duty rate + PST & GST.
