Default What can I get with $20-25k Cad?

Hey guys:

I'm new to this forum, and I have been saving up to buy a Porsche!

I wonder what can I fetch with $20-25k Cad? I contemplated about buying from the States but thought it might not be a good idea since I'm inexperienced with cars.

I'm considering a post-2003 986 or any year 996. Ideally, I would prefer a 911 over Boxster because this is a symbolic purchase to me (first car). Nevertheless, I'd happy with any Porsche.

I saw that Ffaust sold his 2001 996 cab with 96000km for $25k.

Thanks Zookie. IS MK1 the designation of earlier 996? What would be considered as high mileage? 100k miles(160k km)?

If I get my 911 from US, how can I minimize the travel expenses of going south multiple times to do PPI until I find the proper vehicle? I have to pay for the PPI and travel expenses every time I go south.

MK-I were 1999-2001 996's and MK-II were 2002-2005... I dont know what would be High Milage, as i dont care at all about the Mileage on a car, the Condition is more important to me...

as for Importing please do a search in this Canada Section and on www.6speedonline.com Canada section, there have been several Threads regarding that topic

be aware with 996s of IMS failure as this can be expensive to fix (new engine) if you are on a budget...you may want to take your chances or you may try to get cpo or the IMS mod. good luck!
regarding travel, find a car and have the ppi done before you travel and if all checks out fly down to see the car and finalize sale and ship it back.

I'm assuming you like the water pumpers as you mention the 986/996 cars. The over easy llight 911's have dropped in value and lots can be found for the price range you have. Look more for condition, service history and maintenance track record. There are known issues with the cars you're looking but all cars have issues. There is no perfect car and you have to ensure that there is some funds left in case the **** hits the fan. Purchase price has depreciated but the maintenance costs never do.

You can have a very nice boxser S for that price..
trust me.. even if 911 is a emblem.. the boxster is a very nice car
specially with the top down!!

If you don't want the hassle of importing a car, etc..
Leave them a call and ask for Renny, he will help you find a car in a porsche dealer in the US and take care of everything for you..

As Zookie said, condition is more important than mileage (to me) especially if you have a limited cash reserve after purchasing. I bought my car out of the US last summer and aside from the import hassle - which is manageable - there is a lot of opportunity for disappointment if you don't know exactly what you want.

I connected with a respected Rennlister who was originally advising me on how to find the right car but eventually decided to sell me his car once he moved up to a 4S. If you hang out here long enough and speak to enough people, you'll find a referral to a good car.

I'm going to be honest with you and suggest a really nice 996 from the US. I'd probably take a higher mileage 02+ over a 99-01 because of the high possibility of an RMS failure on the earlier cars.

Even better, I'd suggest you take a look at Boxster S models. You'll find a great example, they're reasonably bulletproof and there are lots out there. You're better off with a fine example of a boxster S over a ho-hum 996 IMO.

How about a regular Boxster for $15K (or less) and spending $10K on upgrades for the track (roll cage, Bilstein PSS9 suspension and GT3 control arms, racing seat, Sport Cup tires,...)

Hi Nickia,

Just FYI, last year I picked up a '01 Boxster S in June from a dealer in the Chicago area, After RIV, safety (4 new tires (sigh)),duty, GST/PST, exchange (the dollar was around 87cents then), one-way airfare for 2, and 1 night at a Howard Johnsons in AnnArbor, I got it on the road for just around $25K cdn. The car had under 70,000km on it when I picked it up.

I would assume that u could do about 8-10% better now given the more favourable exchange. I had hoped that the tires would have lasted the season, but the fronts were cupped to the wear indicators on the front, and had to be replaced before I could get a safety.

1999-2008 all have RMS and IMS issues because they have the same Engine and Trans, some more than others and the Odd ones dont...

The 3.4 had a much higher instance of rms failure and sometimes could only be remedied with a new engine. Pre 06 cars all had possible ims issues but an 06 is way out of his price point and therefore I suggested what was within his budget.

I'm not into the 911' secrets and I'm french canadian.....so can someone explain to me what is RMS and IMS ? I'm not even sure nickia know what it's all about !
