Here is Derek Bell doing it in 6:41 in a Porsche 956. Simply amazing, though very old vid, so quality not great....

I was at the 2A corner when Dindo broke the track record two years ago (not sure if it has been broken since). With the speed they were traveling, it felt like the cars could still hit us on the hill, with a pile of tires from the barrier traveling just ahead of them.

R8 is close. Took until 2000 to beat this car and drivers avg lap time but no one has done a quicker section time between flag posts 2 to 3 even today - including the R10.

No to the 917-30. In fact, due to gearing and shorter wheelbase the 917-10 was quicker through this section (Cor 2-3) but still didn't match this driver/car combo.
This car was not as fast as others up the back straight nor the front straight but made up its speed through corners 1, 2, 3 and 4 but lost out in shear grunt to the turbo beast - 30 and the R8, R10 and today's better tire compounds and stiffer carbon chassis cars. Using an engine rated at no better then 530HP it took 18 years for this car/drivers lap record to be broken.

well if I got the clue correctly it was in 2000 so that would put it well past the 956 era I would imagine .. even past the 962 era. i don't even know if the famed GT1 even made it to mosport before going up in a ball of flames

The first car to beat it's lap record was in 2000 - the R8. But it took 18 years to do it. There hasn't been a car yet that can cover the distance between these two points as fast - yet consider all the development that has gone on in chassis and tires over the 28 year period. (Thats a hint) The other hint is putting a 20 year old in a car that doesn't know any better helps...

From teh New York Times;
Geoff Brabham of Australia turned in the fastest qualifying time today to join Teo Fabi in the front row for tomorrow's Can-Am challenge race at Mosport Park. The 60-lap final is the first event of the nine-race North American circuit this year.
Brabham toured the 2.45-mile track in 1 minute 11.056 seconds in a VDS Racing Lola T-530. Fabi, from Italy, driving a March 817 from the Paul Newman racing team, won the pole position yeterday when he sped around the twisting circuit in 1:10.763 - the fastest lap ever at Mosport.
Do I win a new Carrera S?

Your on the right track James - but no cigar yet... 1:10.763 is still slower... And it doesn't address section times - just the over all time. FYI: The T-530 was a pig in modified form from it's F5000 birth and the March wasn't much better.
No Carrera S yet.
