Hey guys,

I just joined and spent several hours just viewing the posts, I'm gonna be in the market for a 993 in the summer, I'm curious on importing from the US, is it worthwhile to do so? is there someone I can hire to do the actual import..paper work and all, I would view the vehicle prior to purchasing it but not really interested in going through the hassle of the import process.

Also, I would love a WB, are the turbos the only ones with the WB or do the NA vehicles come with it as well? do the non turbos come in 2 wheel drive as well as four? appreciate any responses.

There is never been a better time to buy a used 993. Prices have gone down a lot over the past 12 months. You can probably pick-up a decent 993 C2 (narrow body) for about USD 24K south of the border or about CAD 35K if you buy locally. The question about importing or buying locally is up to you: are you prepared for the additional work required for importing a car (long distance travel to view the car, obtaining the recall letter, deal with RIV forms, clear Customs both sides,...) and/or is it worth the saving?
If you want a wide body, you do not necessary have to buy a Turbo: the C2S (2-wheel drive) and C4S (4-wheel drive) share the same platform as the Turbo, but are normally aspirated. Note: C2S and C4S command substancially higher prices than narrow body 993's.

you really should review the website re importing from the US....larger market and better pricing. paperwork is not onerous - especially for cars 15yrs or older....and with our decently valued dollar makes sense.
additionally you will always pay a high premium when dealing with a large dealer vs pvt. individual or small broker.

and whether you buy from an individual or dealer (large or small) you are well advised to get a full/independent p.p.i. (and including a leak down test especially if the compression numbers between the cylinders are not consisitent)

not to mention if it is 15 years or older the 95 993s are now RIV exempt which should make it a WHOLE lot simpler.

For hte RIV, th age goes by model year or manufacture date?

Manufacture date has to be 15 yrs +.

even with RIV it is very easy to import. go to US better selection, better optioned and better deals.

but if you are outside of the RIV you don't have to pay Porsche the kickback for the clearance letter right? that makes things a whole lot easier if I understand it correctly. That is the REAL reason for avoiding RIV.
and if it is date of manufacture even better .. as you know most 96 model years were built in 95 so you may even get a 96 in under the RIV exemption.

thanks for the responses, It sounds like buying from the US is the way to go, more hassle for sure but if i can get something that I really want instead of settling for something Canadian based then it would be worth that hassle.

I thought the the clearance letter can come from a US dealer and only need to pay the kickback if you are under warranty.

If you buy from a U.S. dealer, they should be happy to provide a clearance letter for no extra charge. If you buy from an individual, they may have a relationship with a dealer who will provide the clearance letter. Also, RIV will accept a maintenance record (called PIWIS) printout showing no open campaigns, if it has a dealer stamp on it.

Just do an advanced search here in the the Canada section under the search term "riv", and you'll pull up a bunch of threads.

The import process is not overly difficult, but some of the rules are unevenly applied.

And it's an easy job for a customs broker.

RIV works on date of manufacture, which on US cars is stamped on the VIN plate, driver's door jamb, as MMYY. You'd be crazy not to at least explore buying in the US. The paperwork seems ridiculous at first, and it is, but it's far from being impossible, and, unless your pay is over $1000/hr, it's worth your time.
