Now it is a replace society no need for repair techs...I guess it stands true for the cable business too..lol
Palette..yes you are right on both counts...they are contracting or should I say outsourcing more. Like everything else, low cost contracts and a saving in the benefits packages that they don't have to pay. It seems that this is the direction that most large companies are going ie...Bell Canada, MTO ...I'm just a casualty of the recession I guess..my age has nothing to do with it...lol....yeah right....Thanks all...Bill
Bill, by switchgear I mean cabinets for parallelling gensets between each other and/or with utility, controlling various building loads, etc. downstream of the switchgear, you get your ATS (Automated Transfer Switch) and UPS for critical loads. How much experience do you have with UPS? Where does your son work?

Thanks Clive. We were told that changes were coming. I just did not think it would be at the Technician level. I thought that in Collingwood we were lean and safe as far as techs went, since we covered one main site and three other jump off sites being Owen Sound, Midland and Blue Mountain. Travel time is was the big factor there. I suppose they will restructure the boundries and move the techs around to cover.
What really sucks though is I have the Porsche tucked away for the winter....lol...now I have to work for the real boss.......

Hey Granger...I have absolutely no experience other than flipping the switch to test the transfer switch or just running the genset. I built a small UPS for my home (2500 watts ) that I have on eight glassmat batteries to run my freezers and fridge if another major outage was to happen. Unfortunately most of the maintenance was done by contract and I was mainly a contact person. We were not allowed to play too much with the UPS or the transfer switch (ATS). Those things are scary especially when you are switching 300 plus amp three phase loads. We had to do monthly checks and run the genset under load so I have had some things break down and had to attend. Those were usually mechanical like blown hoses or block heater malfunction, stuff like that. We did not do the work a contractor was called in this case it was Toromont.
My son works for a company in Mississauga by the name of Genrep. He was hired straight out of college by this firm. He has been with them about 2 years and has showed me a thing or two...lol

Bill, all the best at this time for you. I've been downsized 2 times since I turned 50. Happily employed now, but shell shocked!

Thanks Dave. I'm looking forward to a new career. I just might get used to not being on call 26 weeks a year too. That really sucked. Thanks to all for the support....Bill
