Can someone explain this math to me please? What is it that drives our dollar up and down against the US. And with the current economic climate that we are all facing, how can our dollar be getting stronger.

actually I think what is happening in general is our dollar is fairly stable and the US dollar is dropping on world markets with people not seeing the US as a good investment these days and pulling there money out ..

Our government isn't running the printing presses at full tilt like the US and devaluing the currency, we're a commodities based economy, oil is going up as is our "petro-dollar", our debt burden isn't nearly as great as the US and our banking system isn't in shambles. All those things will add up to a CAD that is above parity sometime this year.

a 2005 c2 with CPO is priced at $45k usd, after exchange (12%), duty (6%), modification fee ($1000?), transportation ($1000) and import fee ($1500) the price gets awfully close to what i see canadian c2's listed for.

it's how flexible the dealers are on the CPO pricing, because non-CPO cars go as low as $36k usd.

I'd wait a bit as the dollar is on the rise and start buying CAN $ a little at a time when it's over 0.90 USD. That's what I did last year and averaged buying USD at better than par. The Import Fee is if you hire a broker - I just had my car shipped to a Porsche dealership on the US side and drove down, picked it up and brought it across myself.

I think US sellers will be more motivated than CAN sellers for the most part and you may score a deal! I can understand wanting to keep things simple, but I saved at least $20,000 on my GT3 last year, and got exactly what I wanted because of the larger selection.

Porsche of Farmington Hills (Detroit) did my Canadian conversion for $200 while it was there.

Especially if we get a global economic rebound. Our dollar will strengthen far more than the US$.

you don't need to spend 1000 bucks to modify car or 1000 for importation.
TFX will import for about 250. also better selection in US

this is all good feedback, i'm going to keep an eye out for a CPO c2 or c4.

i'm not really into driving there and picking it up myself, i prefer to have someone that has done all that do it for me.

importation is actually a relatively simple process once you understand all the steps. I imported a 2007 C4S last year that I purchased from a dealer outside of Boston. I drove it back and I was less than 1 hour between U.S. and Canadian customs. I was completely through the RIV process the following day with plates on the car by noon.
