AlarmForce since 1990. No hassle. Dirt cheap: install/ hardware is free since they want you to sign up for the monthly monitoring fee ($25). Wireless sensors throughout the house, uses any phone in the house to arm disarm. They call you when they detect a low battery in one of the sensors. No break in ever...so it probably works as a deterent having their stickers on the windows/doors. I'm sure it's not at Fort Knox level protection. I don't have any Fabergé eggs or Salvatore Dali paintings lying around so it's all I need. My feeling is that if thieves really want in, they'll defeat any commercial system out there.

I'm leaning towards this system.
From the website it's not clear just how many "contacts" etc are in a base install. I need my garage covered as well. 25 dollars a month with free install is a good deal, but if you have to start paying for extra contacts beyond a base install could ramp up the price in a hurry.

I have had ADT for years. Free install as above. $25/month or so as above. I got it since I travel a lot. Only one alarm when the door wasn't latched & blew open. The cops came - I don't use ADT cops - and I got a bill for $75 for their visit.
Like Clive said, the signs are the biggest deterrent.

Stickers help. So do those motion sensor lights. Dogs are good if they are always barking, but late at night, when they're sleeping along with everyone else, thieves will probably get in. Once the dog senses someone and they start barking, god knows what will happen then.

I use counterforce. The install and equipment were free and I had tro sign up for 3 years at $25/month. I am out of the contract now and they charge me $21/month.

Not T.O. but I've got ADT. Pretty good response to the two false alarms we've had, one caused by the dog knocking some stuff off the counter and activating the glass break sensor and one for a poorly closed door that blew open.
Save your $$$ on the alarm company cops though. Their response time is slower than the real ones.

We're also with Alarmforce. Base install included (if memory serves) 2 door contacts and 1 motion detector. We got 1 extra motion sensor and 2 extra door contacts, which you have to pay for up front, rather than rent (I think the motion detector was $100, door contacts were $40). You can add, move, etc whenever you want, and it's got a cellular phone connection in case a thief cuts the phone wire. Plus, according to my wife, an incredibly loud siren!
If you're really concerned about serious security, talk to Jim and he'll get you set up. All these alarms are deterrents - Jim's work will prevent break-ins, no 2 ways about it.

Ah shucks. There are only a couple of Monitoring companies and along with their own customer base they sub-contract their services. The devil as they say is in the detail and the monitoring is only a small part of the matter. The physical install is a part, so is the hard wire to the CS and so is the response data. If one part is out, the whole thing falls apart. Unfortunately you only find this out after the nasty happens.

I wanted a more comprehensive system than what is normally offered and bought my system outright from my security guy for $1,200. It included 3 deluxe key pads, 5 motion sensors, garage door contacts for all 3 garage doors, all doors and windows on both the basement (it's a walkout) and main floor.
