The Board of the Daytona 500 would not let Mazda use the stock chassis. They deemed it an "unfair advantage".

Are you talking NASCAR or Grand-Am?

There's NO WAY IN HELL that the Mazda stock chassis is even close to the prep2 chassis that runs in Grand-Am. The Grand-Am entry is a custom tube-frame affair that is light years ahead of stock.

I was part of a team at Miller a couple of years ago that were paddocked right beside Mazda. When they got t-boned BAD by that DP car, we watched about 10 of their crew try and shovel what was left of the Mazda into the top shelf of their hauler, and it was VERY interesting to see the guts of that car.

I think I have pics around somewhere, I'll see if I can dig them up.

All the while, you could go to your local Porsche dealer and buy the car that we were running. (Cup Car).

It's my contention that the rules that year were skewed in a big way to favour the Mazda for a number of political reasons. I think they've been scaled back a bit now, so it's much more even.

Hey Justin, I believe youre reffering to the Grand-Am sanctioning body as opposed to the Daytona 500, both are based in Daytona. I like Mazda products but in this case the unfair advantage is actually with the GT Porsches. Gand-Am allowed Mazda, GM and Ford the option to run tube frame cars to equalize the competition in the GT class so the resulting competition would yield better racing and TV ratings.

mark,

we were talking about race cars a week or 2 ago at Artisano's and we bounced back and forth on the subject of 944's, rotaries and whatnot. Clean rx-8's are bottoming on the retail side at 13G's now. Cars with stories are 11-12 and salvage cars in Quebec are under 10 (as are clean titled wholesale cars if you bargain hunt). one could have a really excellent track toy at these prices, with plenty of cheap parts to fix em up.

Then again a turbo 944 would still dummy a lot of cars down the straight at mosport

...sorry we got off track!

R U sure your buddies Rx7 is worth it! When he imported the car the yen and the car market were good now that Japan is in a tail spin economy may be it's worth your while to import one from Japan... you should check that avenue out before deciding, at least you'll may get a better idea of its value.

It's amazing what kind of response you get when you leave out a simple "...lol" at the end of sentence. I was just poking some fun at the Mazda vs. Porsche chassis. The statement was completely made up and unfounded...lol

My bad! I manage a Grand-Am Porsche team, so it's a little bit of a touchy subject.

That was me last year. I never went back to the US side of the border to clear their customs as the car was already in Canada. I went straight to the Canadian customs with paperwork in tow. They never asked for any of the paperwork from the US side.

The first step of clearing US customs I believe is to make sure you're not crossing with a car that is stolen or has a lien. The canadian side couldn't care less. Mind you I haven't been back to the US side since. I don't know if I ever get pulled over if I'll be in trouble.

Good luck with your purchase/import.

Now in this video, the Porsche is trying its hardest to keep up with the Mazda so it can get some video but it does not have a chance in hell.
