Prophecy from 17 years ago...
My brother bought this Time international issue in Spain in 1992. He recently found it and scanned it to send to me. The headline could be the same today but I would add: "...and since they never learn, they are doomed to repeat the mistakes of the past".

The conspiracy theorist in me believes that the NA automakers are not really in the dire straights they would have us believe, but are using this as a means to get rid of the autoworkers union. That's just a thought that I have occasionally, no facts to back it up. Just have a hard time believing that they have the problems they are advertising sometimes.

If you're right, then good on them. I really believe the UAW/CAW is running the big 3 into the ground. The CAW seems particularly pig-headed. I heard an interview on CBC last week with Ken Lewenza who said that even though the UAW is offering concessions of $10-$15/hour there will be no CAW wage cuts. How thoughtful - let's allow our ever-smaller membership to make vastly over-market wages, rather than being realistic and spreading the wealth at the same time.

they also wanted a canadian bailout to be announced before the U.S. bailout. Apparently we should bail out foreign companies who professionally burn money, their reasoning being that "we should lead by example". As if the Americans really give a rats a** what we do up here, California has more people and cars than all of canada for pete's sake.
That cover reminds me of the multiple National Geographic, Discover, Popular Science & Scientific American magazines that warned about New Orleans and insufficient protection.

I just got a recall mailed to me from Chrysler for my 2000 Jeep GC. The recall is to replace the electric cooling fan because the blades are flying off making it a saftey issue. So I go down to the dealer where one of my friends is a mechanic and while I'm waiting to see when they can do it I'm in the shop watching him replace tie rod ends on a 2007 Dodge Hemi pickup. So I say "wow, tie rods allready on this new truck?" He replies with telling me that he has trucks and minivans come in with only 15000kms on them needing new tie rods and ball joints.
That is why they are going down the drian imo, poor quality. It sticks with a person when they pay good money for crap. How many times do you hear of a recall from Honda, Toyota, or VW? not often.
