All season tires have come a long way, and some of them do a pretty good job. When mated with AWD they can do OK, but will never be great. But in the worst conditions nothing works like snow tires. Until you have experienced the ability to weave through traffic because nobody else can move they are hard to be appreciated. All it takes is being saved by one panic situation and you become a believer for life. It costs about $150 a year or so to run on snow tires. A small price to pay for the piece of mind.

I ran touring tires that were down to the wear bars last winter. The Cayenne traction control is unbelievable. Runing all seasons now, no plans on installing winters.

I run winters on all my year round cars. The ability of the tires are fantastic. AWD can help you get going, but it's traction that gets you turnin' and stoppin'. You need good tires for traction...and summer/all season tires turn into hockey pucks in the cold.

I run all seasons on my Audi quattro and they are okay, but I do find that I slide in corners and don't stop as fast as i would like. You can get through the winter on all seasons, but if we have snow like last year, it is worth every penny to get snows. The difference will blow your mind.

When I was at Pfaff Autowerks a few months ago, they had a few 911 turbos that ran into all sorts of stuff last winter becuase they were running summer tires. Granted summers do work better when matched with AWD, the difference if they were using winters would be amazing.

Okay, now the real question. Who the hell owns those cars and why do they put such fine machinery through the sand and salt of our wonderful winters?

Snow tires. Why skimp on something so fundamental to your safety as tires?

AWD may help you go forward... but it wont help you stop or turn.

I hear what you are saying zook. Practically, it works well to winter drive exotic cars that are AWD with winters on them, but I guess I am just old school. I know in my Audi I am always bringing in salt and crap on my boots and even with pant saver car mats, my carpets get wet and salt stained. I also think of a $500k sports car as a pure exotic that should always be clean and shiny, and to see one covered in winter dirt makes me cringe. I guess the bottom line is if you can afford a car like that, you probably don't really care about stuff like that.

The funniest thing and i see it all the time... People/Friends storing their stock 2001 VW and driving a 1980 VW insted for the winter... Makes no sense... Your 2001 VW is not going to gain any value sitting in the garage over winter rusting away...

Back to topic... Living in and around the City, how many days is there actually SNOW on the road that you have to drive thru? If you live outside the city then yes you will most likely need Winter Tires that can tackle the snow much better because as we all know outside the city there is more Snow and it gets cleared less often...

I ran into a sudden snow fall (not even heavy, but nice coat on roads) few years ago when I had my A4 Quattro w/ PZero Rosso summers on. I could not stop or turn properly even w/ the AWD.

Snow tires aren't just for snow... they are designed to have better grip in low temperatures so you have more traction even on that sunny cold day that the roads are clear.

Just think about the difference in grip on track between cold and warmed up "R" compounds!
