Default iphone performance meter app

I can't imagine this is all that good but for $13 I'll be the guinea pig.

I'm going try this out this afternoon - will report back.

Can the iPhone make coffee too? Joke aside, if this performance meter works, I want one (well, I need to get an iPhone first). Can it measure/record lap times at Mosport...

Within the clock function, the iPhone's got a stopwatch with a lap timer.

But, Arnaud, in order for that to work at Mosport (or even at Dunnville), you'd need someone in the passenger seat with a free hand to press the iPhone buttons and not be holding on for his life!

Bummer! Any volunteer to hold the thing while I am driving at Mosport?

this performance meter beat a $200 unit when tested (recently read an article)
it does not use the gps but movement detected inside iphone.
they should be able to do one using the gps which would work like trackmate...hopefully coming soon.

It's actually pretty darn good for it's price/performance ratio.

Here's a full video test on it http://www.garage419.com/episode/419_20080807

edit: But I wonder how it works on higher power cars? Any word Mr. Teehan?

I haven't had a chance to get out there yet - work keeps getting in the way. That plus I'm a little nervous about running the quarter mile at WOT across Richmond street. brb

Alright, I took it out for an initial test. I think it's actually half decent though I'll save final judgment for when I can do a real run.

The numbers make it look more like I was driving a Yaris, when in fact I was driving my C2S across Adelaide in traffic. Over the next couple of days I'm definitely going to find some wide open space to do a couple of runs to see what it's like. I'll post back with results - for now, here's the Yaris run so you can see what it tracks:

acceleration:
0-10 1.31
0-20 2.08
0-30 2.83
0-40 4.06
0-50 5.16
0-60 11.11

time:
60' 2.89sec @ 29.5
330' 6.76 @ 56.5
1/8 mi 10.57 @ 59.3
1000' 14.41 @ 59.4
1/4 mi 18.06 @ 53.8

Misc:
Max Speed 62.8
Max Acceleration 1.24 G's (this was bogus because of the mounting*)
Peak Horsepower 224hp

*The software suggests a firm mount so the accelerometers can function properly (I just put it between my legs for this run).

Is "between your legs" not a "firm mount"

Running an 18 second quarter doesn't excite me.

It's a fun toy. I haven't done any 0-60 runs but the g-meter is cool. It was kind of surprising to see that I was pulling 0.91g on my local on-ramp. I wasn't even pushing that hard! I am curious to see what kind of cornering forces I will see at Mosport.

So what's this bit about a hidden kill switch in Apple's 3G iphone? I love this line from the article.

discovered a URL while poking around inside the iPhone 2.0 software that downloads a list of "malicious" applications every so often to the iPhone
I wonder what does Apple consider malicious.

You can see the entire article here.

Steve Jobs, Apple's chief executive, has confirmed there is a 'kill switch' built into the iPhone that allows Apple to remotely delete malicious or inappropriate applications stored on the device.
